Finland!

Heräsin aamulla noin klo 7 ja lähdin koiran kanssa tunnin lenkille. Kaupunginpuisto oli täynnä sinivuokkoja! Kaunista. Kotona aamupalalla tappelin veljeni kanssa viimeisistä pannukakun paloista. Täällä pätee viidakon laki ja minä olin tällä kertaa se heikompi osapuoli.

I woke up around 7am and went for an one-hour-walk with the dog. The city park was full of hepaticas! Beautiful. At home I fought with my brother for the last pancake we had for breakfast. We abide by the laws of jungle and I was the weaker one this time.

Lennot meni hyvin ja olen taas kotona. Illan ohjelma oli pääsääntöisesti sitä, että näin isoäitini, perheeni, sisarusteni muutaman kaverin ja sitten Nukan. Nuka on yhä vaan vieläkin liian söpö! Tässä on muutamia valokuvia minusta kotona. Kirjoitan lennosta myöhemmin tällä viikolla. Nyt täytyy nukkua. Netti on niin nopea!!

Flights went well and I'm back home. The evening's programme consisted mostly of seeing my grandmother, my family, some friends of my siblings and then Nuka. Nuka's still just too adorable! Here are some photos of me at home. I'll write about the flight later this week. Now I really need to sleep. The Internet is so fast!!

Äiti päätti että ihan alkuun pestään kaikki mun vaatteet ötököiden varalta. Olin ihan samaa mieltä! Isä oli kasvattanut 50-kriisi-parran. / Mom decided to wash all my clothes for any possible bugs. I totally agreed! Dad had grown a 50-year-crisis-beard.

Thailand - day 88 (MHS-Chiang Mai-Bangkok)

Minua vastasssa Bangkokissa oli Som ja hänen ystävänsä (jonka nimea en muista, olen valitettavan surkea thai-nimien kanssa). / At Bangkok there were Som and her friend (can't remember his name, sorry I'm terrible with Thai names).

Som ei ollut muuttunut yhtään kolmen vuoden aikana! Edelleen sama iloinen, pieni (tosin laihempi) thai-tyttö Etelä-Afrikasta.
Som had not changed at all during the 3 years! Still the same happy, small (though thinner) Thai girl from South Africa.

Thailand - day 87 (MHS)

Tänään oli sitten minun viimeinen päiväni Mae Hong Sonissa. Heräsimme aamupäivällä ja lähdimme kaupunkiin. Taran altaan vesi oli vihreämpää kuin viime lauantaina, mutta uimaan oli päästävä. Katriina, Rosita ja Janette liittyivät seuraamme hieman myöhemmin. Rosita ja Janette hoitivat ja huolehtivat minusta. He hieroivat jalkojani ja antoivat ”kuplahieronnan” selkääni, kun makasin vedessä. He myös huolehtivat, että olin koko ajan auringossa, mutta myös siitä, että tunsin oloni viileäksi.
Uimisen ja auringon oton jälkeen Elina vei minut Salweeniin vielä viimeiselle Khao Soylle. Söin oman Khao Soyn köhimättä (toisin kuin Elina) ja vain yhdellä vesilasilla (toisin kuin Elina). Kai meillä, äiti, on chilipurkki kotona odottamassa minua?
Netti ei taas toiminut yläluokassa, joten olen Elinan koneella. Jotain vastoinkäymisiä vielä tähän loppuunkin on riitettävä. Mutta huomenna aamulla lähden Mae Hong Sonista ja menen Chiang Main kautta Bangkokiin. Pakkaus on melko lailla hoidettu. Toivotaan, että reissu sujuu ongelmitta. Vaikka kotona äiti ja varsinkin isä voi luottaa siihen että, että en ole ihan ekaa kertaa matkalla, joten kyllä niistä mahdollisista ongelmistakin selvitään.

So today was my last day in Mae Hong Son. We woke up in the forenoon and left for town. The pool water in Tara was greener than last Saturday but we just had to go swimming. Katriina, Rosita and Janette joined us a little later. Rosita and Janette looked after me. They gave me foot massage and “bubble massage” on my back as I lay in the water. They also made sure I was in the sun but still feeling cool all the time.
After swimming and tanning Elina took me to Salween for one last Khao Soy. I ate my Khao Soy without coughing (unlike Elina) and with just one glass of water (unlike Elina). We do have a jar of chili at home, right mom?
The Internet didn’t work in the upper classroom again so I’m at Elina’s laptop. There always must be some obstacles for the very end. But tomorrow morning I’m leaving Mae Hong Son and will fly to Bangkok via Chiang Mai. Packing is pretty much all done. Let’s hope the journey goes well. Though at home mom and especially dad can trust that I’m not traveling for the first time in my life so I can handle the possible problems as well.

Thailand - day 86 (MHS)

Aloitimme tänään klo 7 haravoimaan hoopakin aluetta. He korvasivat näin ensi maanantain liikuntatunnit. Koulu alkoi klo 8:30. Minulla oli viimeiset tunnit joka tytön kanssa ja koulun jälkeen päätimme heidän arvosanoistaan Elinan kanssa.
Viideltä lähdin Kivisten ja Elinan kanssa Taraan jäähyväispäivälliselleni. Tilasin tomaattikeittoa alkupalaksi ja sitten Fillet mignonin pippurikastikkeella pääruoaksi. Se oli todella hyvää! Rosita ja Janette saivat jostain oudon ötökän pureman ja kehuivat minua koko aterian ajan. Nenäni, varpaani, käteni ja kaikki saivat osansa. Vaikka Rosita kyllä myönsikin rehellisyyden nimissä: ”Olet täydellinen, madam. Kaikki muu paitsi luonteesi.”
Kun palasimme hoopakille joimme kahvit ja tytöt olivat keksineet ohjelmaa. Janette esitti ”Yy, kaa, koo, nee, yy, kaa, koo, nee, viis... Ystävyys hymyistä tehty on...” –laulun Timon säestäessä kitaralla. Katriina ja Rosita olivat keksineet uudet sanat minusta lauluun, jonka alkuperäisiä sanoja en muista nyt kunnolla ulkoa. Molemmissa silmissä tuntui olevan roskia koko illan.

We began raking the horpak area at 7 o’clock this morning. They made up for the PE lessons for next Monday like this. The school started at 8:30am. I had my last lessons with each of the girls and after school I decided on the grades for them with Elina.
At 5pm I left with the Kivinen’s and Elina for Tara for my farewell dinner. I ordered tomato soup for starters and then “fillet mignon with pepper sauce” as my main course. It was really good! Rosita and Janette got bitten by some strange bug and kept complementing me throughout the whole meal. My nose, toes and hands all got their share. Although Rosita admitted in all honesty: “You are perfect, madam. Everything but your persona.”When we returned to horpak we had coffee and the girls had come up with some programme. Janette sang a song which goes like this: “One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, five… Friendship is made out of smiles…” (free translation) while Timo accompanied her with his guitar. Katriina and Rosita had made up new words about me for a song which original words I can’t now quite remember. I got something in both of my eyes the whole evening.

Thailand - day 85 (MHS)

Tänään otettiin koulukuva. / Today we took the school photo.

Illalla lähdin Virpi-Marian kanssa iltatorille vielä viimeiset tuliaiset ostamaan. Torin jälkeen kävimme vielä viimeisessä jalkahieronnassa. Hierontapaikassa naisilla oli televisio auki, sillä paikallinen Salatut Elämät täytyi luonnollisesti katsoa. Joku nainen oli raskaana ja sitten kaksi miestä tappeli ja sitten toinen niistä miehistä päätyi baariin juomaan. En valitettavasti tämän paremmin ymmärtänyt juonta. Hieronnan lopussa hartiahierontakin hoidettiin ehdottomasti niin päin, että hierojat pystyivät seuraamaan televisiota samalla. Oli se hieronta silti ihan 200 bahtin arvoista.
Olin niin huojentunut, kun sain tänään Suomesta viestin: “Täällä on aivan ihanan lämmin ja kesäinen ilma”. Olen pelännyt, että joudun palelemaan ja pitämään villahousuja koko kesän. Täällä tänäänkin laski asteet viimein 30 ja 35 Celcius-asteen välille, joten pystyi vaihteeksi jopa hengittää ja käymään makuuhuoneesta nopeasti keittiössä ilman, että täytyi palata suihkun kautta ilmastoituun makuuhuoneeseeni. Niin montako astetta siellä Suomessa on?

In the evening I left with Virpi-Maria to the evening market to buy some last presents. After the market we also went to the foot massage for one last time. At the massage parlour the women had the TV on for there was no way that the local “7de Laan” was to be missed. Some woman was pregnant and then two men had a fist-fight and then the other man ended up in a bar drinking. Unfortunately I couldn’t understand the plot any better. In the end of the massage the shoulder massage was done so that the women could face the TV at the same time. Well the massage was still worth the 200 baht.
I was so relieved when I received an SMS from Finland today: “It’s so nicely warm and summery weather”. I’ve been afraid that I have to feel cold and wear woolen pants the whole summer. The temperature went finally down to something between 30 and 35 degrees Celcius today so one could actually breathe and go quickly from the bedroom to the kitchen without having to have a shower before returning to the air-conditioned bedroom. So how many degrees is there in Finland?

Thailand - day 84 (MHS)

Tänään taas satoi. Sähkökatkoksia on alituiseen ja tukkee pitää edelleen meteliä öisin. Pakkaaminen sujuu pikkuhiljaa ja kotiin pitäisi lähteä sunnuntaina. Saatan jäädä tänne... tai Bangkokiin Somin luo... Ei sitä tiedä. Liian jännittävää nähdä Som taas kolmen vuoden jälkeen - ja ehkä myös Ming!!!
Katsottiin Elinan kanssa Driving Lessons -elokuva. Se oli todella, todella, todella omituinen ja sekava. Edes Rupert Grintin säälittävä olemus ei riittänyt saamaan mitään sympatiapisteitä.

It rained today again. Power cuts occur perpetually and tokay is still making noises during the nights. Packing is going slowly but surely ("..slowly but surely, it's SHOW TIME!" Sorry, but I just had to do that.) and I should be leaving home on Sunday. I might stay here... or in Bangkok with Som... You never know. Too excited to see Som after three years - and maybe Ming too!!!
Elina and I watched Driving Lessons -movie. It was really, really, really weird and confusing. Not even Rupert Grint's pathetic essence could raise any sympathy in me.

Thailand - day 83 (MHS)

Kävin koulun jälkeen lainaamassa Kivisten vaakaa matkalaukkua varten. Nyt alkaa ihan vakava pakkaaminen eli valtavan tavaramäärän sullominen liian pieneen laukkuun.
Päätin myös aloittaa matokuurin näin reissun loppuun - ihan vain varmuuden vuoksi.

I went to borrow the scale of the Kivinen's for my suitcases. Now begins the serious packing known as stuffing too much stuff into too small bag.
I also decided to take some anthelmintics before I leave home - just in case.

Thailand - day 82 (MHS)

No onpa sekin tullut tehtyä tässä kuumuudessa: Lukitsin itseni ulos. Mahtavaa! Onneksi Elina oli kotona ja päästi mut sisään. Noloa...
Vietin iltapäiväni tänään kaupungin ainoassa ilmastoidussa kahvilassa, Ban Tua Lekissa kirjoittelemassa vielä muutamia kortteja.

Well now I've done that too here in the heat: Locked myself outside. Wonderful! Luckily Elina was home and let me in. Embarrassing...
I spent my afternoon in the only coffee house in town with air/con, Ban Tua Lek, writing some more cards still.

Maanantaina Thaimaassa pidetään keltaista, joka on kuninkaan väri. Minä ja Beth ainakin olemme täysin sopeutuneet kulttuuriin.
On Mondays they were yellow here in Thailand. Yellow is the colour of the king. At least Beth and I are totally settled in with the culture.

Thailand - day 81 (MHS)

Heräsin aamulla ja melkein heti lähdettiin brunssille Salweeniin. Siitä sitten ajettiin Tara-hotellille. Ensimmäinen päivä Mae Hong Sonissa, kun pystyi uhraamaan koko päivän altaalla. Se oli sen arvoista! Banaanipirtelöä, hyvä kirja, aurinkoa, puhdas allas ja varsin lämmin sää. Oi ihanuutta!
Muuta ei sitten päivään paljon mahtunut. Kävimme syömässä pähkinäkanaa Crossroadsissa paluumatkalla hotellilta ja sitten katsottiin Ihanneaviomies kotona. Nyt olen netissä. Toivotaan, että tänään ei enää olisi uusia sähkökatkoksia.

I woke up in the morning and we left almost immediately to Salween for brunch. From there we drove to Tara hotel. First whole day in Mae Hong Son which we could spend lying by the pool. It was worth it! Banana shake, good book, sun, clean pool and rather warm weather. Just lovely!
Otherwise I've done pretty much nothing today. We went to eat chicken with cashew nuts at Crossroads on the way back from the hotel and then we watched An Ideal Husband at home. Now I'm on the Internet. Let's hope there won't be any more power cuts today.

Thailand - day 80 (MHS-Bat Cave-Fish Park-MHS)

Lähdin aamulla Kivisten kanssa n. klo 9:30 hoopakilta ja ensimmäisenä ajoimme lyhyen työreissun Nai Soihin.

I left the horpak with the Kivinen's at 9:30 in the morning and first we made a quick business trip to Nai Soi.

Sitten he veivät minut Pang Ma Phan ohi Tam Nam Lod -luonnonsuojelu-, -kehitys- ja -laajennuskeskukseen, missä luolat olivat.

Then they took me past Pang Ma Pha to Tam Nam Lod wildlife conservation, development and extension station where the caves were.

Taas oli ollut metsäpaloja. / Again there had been wildfires.

Luolien jälkeen söimme lounasta kello yhden aikaan ja lähdimme takaisin päin pysähtyen matkalla Thampla Ranger Stationilla, missä siis kalat olivat.

After the caves we had lunch around one o'clock and then we started our way back stopping by the Thampla Ranger Station on the way and this was where the fishes were.

The day was great! I'm so tired now. It rained in the evening. We had planned to go walking down the night bazaar but with all the lightnings we reckoned there wouldn't be too many stands there.

Tänään:

Thailand - day 78 (MHS)

Kurkku on aina vaan kipeänä, ollut nyt yli viikon. Mut muistettiin kotona tänään, että Mariahan on siellä metsässä edelleen ja kuulin viikon vanhat uutiset. Kiva tietää edes välillä, mitä kotona tapahtuu. Useimminkaan ei olisi kyllä pahitteeksi.

Throat is still just sore, been for over a week now. They finally remembered me at home that I'm here in the forest still and I heard the news from last week. It's so nice even occasionally to know what's happening at home. More often wouldn't be too bad though.

Thailand - day 77 (MHS)

Puolet koulupäivästä kulutettiin auttaen leirin keittiössä: Pilkottiin kurpitsaa ja vesimeloneita leiriläisillä lounaaksi. Todella hygieenistä työtä lattialla +37 asteessa.. Milloin mun taas pitikään sitä hygieniapassia suorittaa? Maistettiin Elinan kanssa myös näille thaimaalaisille valmistettua kanakeittoa. Hieman eri tasoisesti maustettua kuin meidän farankien phet ruoka.

Half of the school day was spent helping at the kitchen: We chopped pumpkin and water melon for the camp's lunch. Very hygienic work on the floor in +37 degrees.. Now when was I supposed to take that hygiene test in Finland? Elina and I tasted the chicken soup made for the Thais. Slightly different spice-level than the phet food for us farangs.

Thailand - day 76 (MHS)

Aamu alkoi viileänä klo 5:27. Heräsin, sillä minua palelsi niin. Ulkona taisi olla varmaan vain +25 astetta. Ihanaa! Usvaista kyllä näyttää olevan. Vuorilla näkyi eilen jälleen paloja, oransseina mustaa taustaansa vasten.
Hmm... Ei kai tänään mitään muuta ihmeellisempää paitsi, että oli Songkranin viimeinen virallinen päivä. Suomeenkin on saatava Songkran! Tai no, ehkä se ei sittenkään Suomen kesähelteillä olisi kovinkaan terveellistä. Ajatus kulkee järkeä nopeammin, minkä Katriinakin sai kokea kemian tunnilla. Märillä vaatteilla on ihanan viileää...
Oppilaskodilla oli säpinää, kun maastopalo oli sytyttää talonmiehen talon tuleen. Onneksi tuli saatiin pysäytettyä.

The morning began chilly at 5:27am. I woke up for I was so cold. There was probably only +25 degrees outside! Lovely! It seems to be hazy though. There we fires on the mountains yesterday again, orange against their black background.
Hmm... I don't thing anything else exciting happened today except that it's Songkran's last official day. We have to have Songkran in Finland! Well ok, it probably wouldn't be such a healthy idea with the temperatures we have there even during summer. My thoughts are racing faster than my mind can function which Katriina got to experience during chemistry. Wet clothes are so nice and cool...
There was a stir here at the hostels when a wildfire was about to burn down the janitor's house. Luckily the fire was stopped.

Thailand - day 75 (MHS)

Leiri alkoi tänään. Lapsia on lähemmäs 200. Heillä oli ensimmäinen kokoontuminen klo 19:30. Tänne on tullut australialaisista koostuva tiimi, joka on vastuussa kokouksista ainakin huomiseen asti. Minut laitettiin ryhmään "soong" eli kaksi - tai niin Elina minulle sanoi. Täytyy katsoa, kuinka paljon pystymme osallistumaan, sillä opetushommat jatkuu, kuten myös yritykset selviytyä tästä helteestä, mikä varmaan kuitenkin tukahduttaa meidät minä hetkenä hyvänsä. Olen varma, että lapset eivät pysty enää ymmärtämään sanaakaan, mitä yritän selittää heille kitkasta ja neliöjuurista ja englannin kieliopista ja heinäsirkoista ja... Niin...

The camp began today. There are closer to 200 kids here. At 7:30pm they had the first assembly. Here's an Australian team that has come up to the mountains to be in charge of the meetings at least until tomorrow. I was put to group "soong" aka two - or so I was told by Elina. We'll see how much we can participate for all the teaching we still have to do and for all the surviving the heat stuff that's going to take the best of us probably soon anyway. Huomenna alkaa täällä leiri. Olemmekin saaneet nauttia monipuolista musiikillista antia tänään, kun nuoret ovat harjoitelleet.
Tässä kaupungissa on yksi ilmastoitu ravintola, jossa saa syödä mitä ruokaa haluaa (esim. Khao Soyta), pukeutua miten haluaa, kuunnella juuri omanlaistaan musiikkia ja ottaa rennosti- minun oma huoneeni. Keittiössä ei nähkääs ole ilmastointia. Kauan eläköön take away!

A camp is to start here tomorrow. So we've got to enjoy versatile musical yields today as the youngsters have been practising.
There's one air-conditioned restaurant in this town where you can have any food you like (e.g. Khao Soy), dress however you like, listen to the music you prefer and relax - my own room. You see, there's no air/con in the kitchen. Long live take away!

Thailand - day 73 (MHS)

Songkran on viimein täällä!! / Songkran is finally here!!
Tänään on sitten vuorostaan kurkku kipeänä, muuten ei kai enää kuumetta. Sairastan viikon ajan ja poden aina seitsemänosan taudista kerrallaan. Huomenna varmaan yskittää.
Songkran, thaimaalainen uusivuosi, alkaa virallisesti vasta huomenna, mutta tänään alkoi kaupungissa jo juhlinta eli veden heittely ihmisiä päin. Kännykkä vaihtoi solutunnisteen tekstiä. Kännykkä ja kamera olivat muuten muovipussissa käsilaukun sisällä, kun menimme kaupunkiin. En ole siis ihan tyhmä.
Laitoin paljon uusia kuvia sinne tänne vanhoihin viesteihini. Siihen meni ikuisuus, joten kaivakaa ne esiin!

Today was turn for my throat to be sore, otherwise no fever I think. I'll be sick for a week and suffer one seventh of the disease at a time. Tomorrow I'm probably coughing.
Songkran, Thai New Year, starts officially only tomorrow but they already began the festivities in town today and started throwing water on people. The cell phone changed the message of its cell info. The cell phone and camera were in a plastic bag inside my purse when we went to town by the way. So I'm not a complete idiot.

Thailand - day 72 (MHS)

Mulla on tänään ollut vähän lämpöä, joten on palellut. Mahtavaa, ihanaa, jippii! Juu, juu, juon kyllä tarpeeksi. Vähän vain väsyttää. Muut lähtivät joelle uimaan.
Kaikki päivät viimeisimmästä Chiang Main reissustani ovat nyt täällä. Anteeksi, ettei ole vielä valokuvia. Lataan niitä niin pian kuin pystyn. Netti on taas aiheuttanut ongelmia ja olen Elinan koneella.
Kävimme illallisella Salweenissa ja tapasimme suomalaisen reppumatkaajan, Jounin. Ensimmäinen tapaamani vieras suomalainen Mae Hong Sonissa. Tulipa sekin koettua. Mae Hong Son oli aivan täynnä länsimaalaisia. Kaikki ovat matkalla kai Paihin ("puna/viher/keltainen" kaupunki täältä Chiang Maihin päin) sunnuntaina alkavaa Songkran-festivaalia varten.
Liiskasin sandaalilla valtavan (5 cm) hämähäkin koulun lattialta. Hyvä minä!

I've had a slight fever today so I've been feeling cold. Awesome, fabulous, yippee! Yes, yes, I am drinking enough. Just feeling a bit tired. The others left for the river to swim.
All the days of my latest trip to Chiang Mai are now here. Sorry for the fact that there are no photos at the moment. I will download them as soon as possible. The Internet's been causing trouble again and I'm using Elina's laptop.
We went to Salween for dinner and we met a Finnish back-packer, Jouni. The first strange Finn I've met in Mae Hong Son. I guess I had to experience this too. Mae Hong Son was full of westerners. Everyone's probably on their to Pai (a "red/green/yellow" town towards Chiang Mai from here) for the Songkran festival starting on Sunday.
I squashed a huge (5 cm) spider on the school floor with my slipper. Go me!

Thailand - day 71 (MHS)

Tästä päivästä ei ole paljon raportoitavaa. Oli pää kauhean kipeä, joten ihme, että selvisin päivästä hengissä. Teimme Katriinan kanssa kaasuhellan ääressä lasagnea aamulla ja mittari näytti jo silloin +30*C. Luulin tosiaan, että kuolen.
Alaluokassa oli "kinkaa"-lisko ja se tosiaan liikkui kinkaten tai hieman hypellen. Juoksi kerran mua päin ja hyppäsin kiljaisten tuolille. Tyhmää..

There’s not much to report on today. I had a terrible head ache so it’s a miracle I survived the day. I made lasagna with Katriina by the gas stove in the morning and the thermometer already said +30*C. I really thought I was going die.
There was a "kin kaa" lizard in the lower classroom and it moved around hopping a little. It once ran towards me and I jumped on the chair screaming. Stupid...
Thank you for all of you who’ve remembered me here! You guys are lovely! I miss you.

Thailand - day 70 (MHS)

Puhelimen krediitti loppui tänään. Juttelin Somin, thaimaalaisen vaihtarikaverini kanssa puhelimessa. Oli ihana kuulla thaimaalaisen puhuvan ymmärrettävää englantia! Somin englanti oli mahtavaa. Tuli vain taas ikävä Etelä-Afrikkaa. Tukkee pitää kamalaa meteliä öisin. Emme saa nukuttua. Toivottavasti joku pian keihästää sen. Kuvan lisko ei ole tukkee vaan joku pieni outovarpainen otus, joka oli eksynyt ulkokeittiöömme.

My phone ran out of credit today. I spoke with Som, my Thai exchange friend on the phone. It was lovely to hear a Thai speaking an understandable English! Som's English was still brilliant. I just started to miss South Africa again. Tokay is making terrible noises during nights. We can't sleep. Hopefully someone will spear it soon. This lizard in the picture is not tokay but just some small weird-toed creature which had got lost in outdoor kichen.

Thailand - day 69 (MHS)

Viimeistä kolmea viikkoa viedään... Sähkökatkokset kiusasivat meitä tänään alituiseen keskiyöstä lähtien: Ei sähköä, ei ilmastointia. Ilman ilmastointia on 10 minuutissa tuskallisen kuuma. Kuinka on mun on tarkoitus nukkua tai opettaa?!
Koulupäivän jälkeen lähdimme Elinan kanssa viilentymään Rooks-hotellin altaalle. Vesi oli vihertävää nyt, kun turistisesonki on ohi, eikä altaista huolehdita. On liian kuuma, niin edes turistit ei viihdy täällä. 80 bahtia likaisesta altaasta oli ehkä vähän liikaa, mutta maksoimme kuitenkin. Kuumuus hidastaa ajatuksen juoksua. Ensi kerralla kokeilemme 100 bahtin allasta paremmassa Tara-hotellissa hieman kauempana kaupungista.
Uinnin jälkeen pyörähdys iltatorilla ja ravintolan kautta 7-Eleveniin ilmastointiin. Tässä 7-Elevenissä on siis kaksi kassaa. Kun pääsimme maksamisvaiheeseen, huomasin toisen kassoista olevan suljettuna. Meinasin Elinalle huomauttaa, että johan on kumma, kun kaksi valkoista faranki-naista tulee ja kassalla on kaksi miestä, eikä toinen kassa ole silti avoinna. Ei tarvinnut sanoa mitään, kun toinen miehistä jo huikkasi minut omalle kassalleen ja sain maksaa ostokseni samantien pois. ”Bye. See you again.” Eivätkä he yleensä ikinä puhu englantia minulle... Kiva välillä näinkin.

Only three weeks to go… Power cuts kept constantly bothering us today starting around midnight: No electricity, no air-conditioning. Without air/con the temperature gets unbearable in 10 minutes. How am I supposed to sleep or teach?!
After school Elina and I left for the pool at the Rooks hotel. The water was greenish now that the tourist season is over and no one takes care of the pools. It’s too hot, even the tourists don’t bother coming here. 80 baht for a dirty pool was probably a bit too much but we paid. The heat slows down your brain functions. Next time we are going to try the 100 baht pool at a better Tara hotel a bit further away from town.
After the swimming we strolled around the evening market and then walked via a restaurant to 7-Eleven and air/con. So there are two cash desks in this 7-Eleven. When we were about to pay, I noticed that the other desk was closed. I was about to note to Elina that what kind of behaviour is this: two white farang women come and there are two cashiers and still the other counter is closed. I didn’t have to say anything when the other man already called me to come to his cash desk and I got to pay my groceries straight away. “Bye. See you again.” And they usually never speak English to me... Nice occasionally like this too.

Kyltti ensimmäisenä kokeilemamme ravintolan ovelta. "Hyvät asiakkaat. Anteeksi! Suljettu. Auki suunnilleen touko-kesäk. 08. Pahoittelisimme aiheuttamaamme vaivaa." Huomatkaa sana "suunnilleen (around)"! Miksi olla liian tarkka? Ja "Pahoittelisimme aiheuttamaamme vaivaa" ...mutta se on liian vaivalloista, joten emme jaksa!?

Thailand - day 68 (MHS)

Taas Mae Hong Sonissa ja normaali arki jatkuu – matematiikkaa ja Internettiä. Pidän nyt omat tuntini huoneessani, sillä yläluokassa ei ole tarpeeksi tilaa opetuksen mukavuuden kannalta ja alaluokassa ei ole ilmastointia. Rosita ja Katriina huomasivat huoneessani Prisman muovipussin ja Aqualan L:n rasvatuubin. Niissä riitti ihmettelemistä. Harmi vain, etten saanut ilmeitä valokuvattua.
Torakat vaikuttivat iloisilta nähdessään minua taas. Yksi valtaisa hiipi hiljoksiin minun ja Elinan luo. Ei varmaan halunnut häiritä keskusteluamme. Taisi molemmilla olla herkällä tuulella, sillä julmasti viskasimme sen ulos ja talloimme nurmikkoon. Oppiipahan hiippailemaan naisten selän taakse.
Kuulokkeet ei toimi. En tiedä, missä on vika: Ei ainakaan ole kuulokkeissa, eikä riittänyt uudelleenasennus. Tietokone vain ilmoittaa: ”Tämä laite ei kynene käynnistymään (koodi 10)”. Jos joku tietää jotain, niin kertokaa ihmeessä. Tarvitsen Skypeni!

Back in Mae Hong Son and the normal routines continue – maths and Internet. I have my own lessons in my room for there’s not enough space for a pleasant lesson in the upper classroom and there’s no air/con in the lower classroom. Rosita and Katriina found my Prisma plastic bag and Aqualan L lotion tube. These Finnish object had lots of curious looks. Such a shame I didn’t manage to photograph their expression.
The cockroaches seemed happy to see me again. One huge one sneaked quietly to me and Elina. It obviously didn’t want to interrupt our conversation. I guess we were both feeling sensitive since we cruelly threw it outside and squashed it in the grass. That should teach him to sneak behind women’s back.
My headset’s not working. I don’t know what the problem is: It’s not the headset and reinstallation didn’t help either. The computer just says: “This device cannot start (code 10)”. If someone knows something, please tell me. I need my Skype!

Thailand - day 67 (CM-Mae Hong Son)

~*~*HYVÄÄ SYNTYMÄPÄIVÄÄ, MAIJA! / HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAIJA!*~*~

Henna lähti aamulla yksin kokoukseen, kun minä jäin vielä pakkaamaan viimeisiä tavaroitani. Jostain syystä olen viikossa ehtinyt hankkimaan muovikassillisen lisää tavaraa, vaikka tarkoitus oli olla ostamatta mitään. Koira makoili vieressäni, kun olin saanut hommat tehtyä. Yö oli viileä, mutta päivällä tulee niin kuuma. Kiviset hakivat minut yllättäen jo heti puolen päivän jälkeen 15 minuutin varoitusajalla. Tarkoitus oli lähteä vasta myöhemmin iltapäivällä. Onneksi jäin pakkaamaan.
Ensin KinLeniin lounaalle ja sitten Rimpingin ostamaan meetvurstia, keksiä ja leipää. Sitten oli edessä surullisen kuuluisa vuoristotie Mae Hong Soniin. Automatka pelotti jo etukäteen ja syystäkin, kun alkoi sitten satamaankin kaatamalla. Ei sellaista Suomen ”kaatosadetta” vaan ihan _oikeaa_ kaatosadetta. Onneksi Elina oli jättänyt Kivisille yhden pahoinvointipillerin minua varten, joten en koko matkan aikana voinut pahoin. Ihanaa! Pysähdyimme kerran jalkojen oikaisua ja kattotelineen tarkistusta varten ja sitten kerran syömään Pain thai-ravintolaan. Khao Soy on niin hyvää!
Paissa oli koko kylän kattava sähkökatkos. Pain jälkeen sade jatkui ja salamat välähtelivät taivaalla. Vesiliirto ja muutama puu tiellä auttoi pitämään pientä jännitystä yllä. Lähemmäs Mae Hong Sonia tultaessa sade kuitenkin lakkasi ja maa oli kuivaa – koko viikkona ei ollut satanut. Vuorilla oli tulipaloja joka puolella ja hetken pelkäsimme joutuvamme takaisin siihen kauheaan savuun, mutta juuri ennen Mae Hong Sonia alkoi taas sataa. Oli kyllä ihana tunne, kun oltiin viimein perillä, vaikka kastuinkin vähän juostessani kämpälle – katoksen alla, miettikäähän sitä!
Minulle oli tullut kirje Suomesta! Siinä oli juuri niitä asioita kuin mistä minä täällä haluan tietää, kun elo on muuten niin eristäytynyttä. Mutta ainakaan kotonani ei ole ymmärtänyt vieläkään, että haluan siis tietää kaiken, mitä sielläpäin tapahtuu: jos enoni tulee puhumaan kotiseurakuntaani, jos tulee mitään muutoksia terveydentiloissa, jos joku saa arven polveensa, jos Nuka ei syö kunnolla, jos joku tuttupariskunta eroaa, jos joku odottaa vauvaa, jos joku... Ymmärtänette pointin. En halua sisäistää tätä kaikkea yhtenä ryppäänä, kun tulen kotiin. Eikä meinaa mennä perille, vaikka sanoo suoraan. Mutta ihan vain tiedoksi, Saara: Minä kyllä tiedän, mikä Holiday Inn on. :P
Aah, ihanaa kun on ilmastointi!

Henna left for the church this morning when I stayed behind to pack my last belongings. For some reason I’ve managed to get one bag extra during this week even though it was my plan not to buy anything. The dog lay beside me when I was finished. The night was cool but the days get so hot. The family came to pick me up surprising already 12:20pm with a 15-minute notice. We had planned to leave later in the afternoon. Luckily I stayed behind to pack.
First to KinLen for lunch and then to Rimping to buy mettwurst, biscuits and bread. Then we were facing the infamous mountain road to Mae Hong Son. The car trip felt scary even beforehand and for a good reason when it started pouring with rain. Not like when it rains “heavily” in Finland, but like when it rains _for real_. Luckily Elina had left one motion sickness pill with the Kivinen’s for me so I didn’t feel sick during the whole trip. Lovely! We stopped once to stretch our legs and to check the roof-rack and then once in Pai at a Thai restaurant to eat. Khao Soy is so good!
There was a power cut covering the whole town of Pai. After Pai the rain continued and lightnings flashed across the sky. Hydroplaning and few trees on the road held a certain excitement throughout the journey. When we were getting closer to Mae Hong Son the rain stopped and the land was dry – it had not rained during the whole week. There were fires everywhere on the mountains and we were afraid of returning to the same awful smoke that we left. But just before Mae Hong Son it started to rain again. It was such a lovely feeling when we were finally back even though I got wet running to the apartment – under a canopy, think about that!
I received a letter from Finland! There were exactly those things written on it that I want to know here when my life is otherwise so isolated. But at least at home they still haven’t understood that I want to know everything that happens down there: if my uncle comes to speak at my home church, if someone’s health varies, if someone gets a scar on their knee, if Nuka is not eating well, if a couple I know gets divorced, if someone’s expecting a baby, if… You get the point. I don’t want to learn all this at the same time when I return. And they just won’t get it even though I’ve told them. But just for the record, Saara: I do know what Holiday Inn is. :P
Oh, how lovely to have air/con!

Thailand - day 66 (CM)

Siirsin toissapäivänä aloittamani musiikkiprojektin viimeiset kappaleet CD:ille. Hennalla ei ole polttavaa DVD-asemaa, joten homma oli melko hidasta. Lähdimme Alexin kanssa Kad Suan Kaewille, myös Centralina tunnetaan. Se on Chiang Main toinen suuri ostoskeskus, Airport Plazaa vanhempi. Se oli aivan kuin 50 vuodeksi hylätty talo olisi restauroitu ja siitä tehty ostoskeskus. Siellä oli valitettavasti huonompi ilmasointi kuin Airport Plazalla ja se oli melko sekava, mutta silti omalla tavallaan melko viihtyisä. Tuossa lauseessa ei välttämättä ollut nyt mitään järkeä. Starbucks oli ainakin upea porrastettuine tasanteineen.
Tarkoitus oli mennä elokuviin, joka olisi maksanut 90 bahtia näin viikonlopulta, mutta se idea ei lopulta toteutunut. Ostin vain Khao Soyta lounaaksi ja Hennalle päänsärkypillerin. Näimme myös thaimaalaisen version Johnny Deppistä, joten reissu ei todellakaan mennyt hukkaan.
Takaisinpäin tullessa yritettiin oikaista ilmavoimien alueen läpi. Mielenkiintoista, miten sellainen tie oli edes merkitty turistikarttaan. No, päädyimme kiertämään isompaa tietä pitkin takaisin Hang Dongiin.
Katsoimme illalla Martin Scorsesen elokuvan, The Departed ja minä söin kohtuullisen monta keksiä – ne ovat epäterveellisiä, mutta niin hyviä! Leonardo DiCaprio oli roolissaan hyvä. Jack Nicholson on yleisesti ärsyttävä – Jokerina se ehkä vielä menee. Mutta vähänkö tämä The Departed loppui typerästi!
Hauska muuten, miten Hennan kanssa meillä on samanlainen maku elokuvien ja näyttelijöiden suhteen – melko lailla täsmälleen. Hän ei tosin tiedä Jason Isaacsia. Mutta olen aina ajatellut, että mulla on liian omalaatuinen ja outo maku elokuvien suhteen. Joka tapauksessa, Henna sai mut käsittämään, mikä mua on jotenkin aina vaivannut Adam Sandlerissä ja nyt kun osaan suhtautua siihen oikein, niin kaikki sen leffat on hyviä. Vaikka sillä siltikin edelleen on munanmuotoinen pää. Luontoäiti on julma.

I transferred the last songs of my music project which I started day before yesterday to CDs. Henna doesn’t have a burning DVD drive so the task was rather slow. We left with Alex to Kad Suan Kaew, also known as Central. It’s another big shopping center in Chiang Mai, older than Airport Plaza. It was like a huge building abandoned for 50 years and then renovated into a shopping mall. It unfortunately had a worse air-conditioning than Airport Plaza and it was pretty rambling but on its own way rather cosy. The Starbucks was brilliant with its gradually descending floor.
We were planning on going to the movies which would’ve been 90 baht for these weekend shows, but the idea was pursued. I just bought Khao Soy for lunch and pain killers for Henna. We also saw a Thai version of Johnny Depp so the trip definitely was not in vain.
On our way back we tried to take a short cut through an Air Force area. It’s interesting how a road like that is even marked on a tourist map. Well, we ended up taking the longer way along a bigger road back to Hang Dong.
In the evening we watched Martin Scorsese’s movie, The Departed and I ate a fairly few cookies – they are unhealthy, but so good! Leonardo DiCaprio was good in his role. Jack Nicholson is just generally irritating – as a Joker I can maybe tolerate him. But did this The Departed end in a stupid way!
It’s funny how Henna has the same kind of taste with movies and actors as me – pretty much exactly. She doesn’t know Jason Isaacs, though. But I’ve always thought that my sense of movies is too unique and weird. What does it tell about Henna? Yes well, Henna made me understand what has always somehow bothered me with Adam Sandler and now that I know to take an attitude accordingly I think all of his movies are good. Even though he still has an egg-shaped head. Mother Nature is cruel...

Thailand - day 65 (CM)

No niin, eilinen lounaani ei siis ilmeisesti viihtynyt vatsassa enää viime yötä ja otti hatkat. No ainakaan ei tarvinnut lähteä töihin, kun aamulla oli niin heikko olo. Tämä oli ensimmäinen kerta, kun maha reagoi mitenkään paikalliseen ruokaan. Katsoin ajankuluksi Luunmurskaajat -elokuvan. Pidän Adam Sandlerista joka elokuvan myötä enemmän ja enemmän. Myös muut näyttelijät olivat hyviä.
Illalla yritimme mennä ravintolaan kadun toiselle puolelle, mutta se oli kiinni, joten otimme songthaewin Black Canyoniin. Ruoan jälkeen kävimme pikaisesti viereisessä Rimpingissä ostamassa hedelmiä ja sitten ajattelimme kävellä takaisin Hennalle. Oli kyllä kuuma, joten kun tuk-tuk kuski lupasi viedä meidän ilmaiseksi Hang Dongin torille, niin emme kieltäytyneet. Maksoimme hänelle jopa 7 bahtia.
Illalla satoi, mutta ilma ei viilennyt ollenkaan. Harmillista...

My yesterday’s lunch didn’t prosper in my stomach any longer and took off last night. Well at least I didn’t have to go to work after feeling so weak in the morning. This was the first time when my stomach reacted somehow to the local food. I watched the Longest Yard to pass the time. I like Adam Sandler more and more after each movie. Also the other actors were good.
In the evening we tried going to a restaurant just across the street but it was closed so we took a songthaew to Black Canyon. After the meal we quickly stopped by the near Rimping and bought some fruits and then thought to walk back to Henna’s. It was hot so when a tuk-tuk driver promised to take us to Hang Dong Market for free we didn’t say no. We even paid him 7 bahts.
It rained in the evening but it didn’t cool the air at all. Such a shame…

Thailand - day 64 (CM)

Ajattelin vain kertoa kaikille: Olen yhä Chiang Maissa. Mae Hong Sonissa on edelleen liikaa savua, joten olemme viikonloppuun asti täällä. Työt jatkuu kyllä. Kirjoitan lisää myöhemmin.

Just thought to let you know: I am still in Chiang Mai. There is too much smoke in Mae Hong Son so we are staying here until the end of the week. Still work though. I will write more later.

Virpi-Maria haki minut aamulla, sillä Timo lähti Hang Dongin seurakunnan miesporukan kanssa Mae Sariangiin päiväksi. Pidin tänään osan Janen englannin tunnista siten, että katsoimme Cartoon Networkiä – opettelimme englannin kuuntelua. Henna haki mut koulusta ja menimme suoraan Ban Tawaille, joka on Chiang Main kuuluisa puunveistokylä. Aikaa ei ollut paljon, kun juuri saapumisen jälkeen Hennalle soitettiin, että autoa tarvittiinkin puolen tunnin päästä. No ostokset tuli tehtyä nopeasti.
Minä väsäilin Hennan läppärin kanssa illan ja siitä hyvästä Henna toi minulle torilta kevätkääryleitä ja phat thaita. Hyvää. Suomessa vain välillä kesäisin miettii kahdesti, että meneekö mihin tahansa ravintolaan syömään, kun ei tiedä, että miten siellä säilytetään ruoka-aineita kesähelteillä (noin +22*C). Täällä on yli +35*C ja toivon vain parasta, valmistaudun pahimpaan.
Käytiin KinLenissä siis siinä suomalaisravintolassa taas syömässä illalla. Ravintolan edessä oli joku miesjoukko. No niin röyhkeää kuin huutelu onkin, niin ainakin se todisti, että emme ehkä olekaan niin lihavia edes thaimaalaisten silmissä. Tänään päätimme mennä viimein ajoissa eli siis ennen puoltayötä nukkumaan. Kello on nyt 23:55...

Virpi-Maria picked me up in the morning because Timo had left for Mae Sariang with the men from the Hang Dong church for the day. We spent a part of the English lesson with Janette watching Cartoon Network – practicing the listening of English. Henna picked me from school and we went to Ban Tawai which is a famous woodcarving village here in Chiang Mai. We didn’t have much time since right after we arrived Henna got a phone call that the car was needed in half an hour. Well the shopping was done quickly.
I was organized some of Henna’s laptop for the evening and for that Henna brought me spring rolls and phat thai from the market. Tasty. In Finland during summer one sometimes thinks where to eat for you don’t know how they preserve their ingredients during the hot Finnish weather (about +22*C). Well it’s over +35*C and I just hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
We went to KinLen, the Finnish restaurant, again in the evening. There were a group of men outside the restaurant. No matter how rude the hollering is, at least it proved that we are probably not that fat even in the eyes of the Thais. Today we decided to go to bed early which means before midnight. It’s now 11:55pm...
