Home again! It was one interesting journey as the flight was almost 4 hours late. But today I've enjoyed the lovely weather! I had myself tested for MRSA today and I'm hoping for negative results on Monday. Minna already put me to work...

Thu 13/12/12 - London-Finland

Aamulla hieman shoppailua vielä Camdenin torilla. Tänään lähtee kone kohti Helsinkiä klo 18:40 Lontoon aikaa. Perillä pitäisi olla klo 23:30 Suomen aikaa. En malta odottaa, että saan raahata matkalaukkuni Wimbledonista lentokentälle... Mutta pakko mikä pakko! Toivottavasti matka lentokentältä kotiin sujuu hyvin. Mulla ei nimittäin ole puhelinta, jos jokin menee pieleen - paluu 90-luvulle, en tiedä miten selviän!

In the morning some shopping at Camden market. Today the plane leaves towards Helsinki at 6:40 pm London time. It should land at 11:30 pm Finnish time. I can't wait to start dragging my suitcases from Wimbledon to the Gatwick airport... But there's nothing I can do about it! I hope the trip from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport to home goes well. I won't have a phone if something goes wrong - back to the 90's, I don't know how I'll manage!

Wed 12/12/12 - London 6/7

Vietettiin siis 12.12.12 klo 12:12 Victorian asemalla. Tytöt lähtivät tänä iltana takaisin koti-Suomeen. Mä kiertelin hieman katsellen mahdollista ostettavaa, mutta mitään niin tärkeää en oikein löytänyt, että olisin viitsinyt lisätä painoa matkalaukkuun - paitsi laukkuvyön. Sitten kävin hieman kävelemässä Hobbitin ensi-illan punaisen maton läheisyydessä Leicester Squarella. Hirvittävästi ihmisiä! Illan olen pakkaillut.

So we spent 12.12.12 at 12:12 at Victoria station. The girls left back to homey Finland today. I did some walking around looking for something to shop but eventually found nothing so important that it could've made me add any weight in my suitcases - except for a bag strap. Then I went for a walk by The Hobbit's red carpet premiere at Leicester Square. So many people! In the evening I've been packing.

Tue 11/12/12 - London 5/7: Lion King!

Päivä kului pitkälti Maxeenin valokuvaussessiossa avustaessa, mutta illan kohokohta oli jotain ylitsepääsemättömän huikeaa: Leijonakuningas-musikaali Lyceum-teatterissa! Olen tällä hetkellä niin hyvällä tuulella, etten itsekään ihan usko.

The day was mostly spent by helping Maxeen with her photo shoot but the climax of the evening was something insuperably fantastic: Lion King musical at Lyceum theatre! I'm still on such an incredibly happy mood I can hardly believe it myself!

I was just resting my eyes for the show so I wouldn't miss anything.

Sat 08/12/12 - London 2/7: Museums

Brunssilla Maxeenin kanssa Waterloolla, hieman kiertelyä Lontoon Kansallisgalleriassa ja sitten vähän enemmän kiertelyä luonnohistoriallisessa museossa. Siitä oli tämä päivä tehty.

Fri 07/12/12 - Merthyr -> London 1/7

Tänään olikin aika sanoa Merthyr Tydfilille hyvästit ja matkata Lontooseen. Matkalaukkuinemme siirryimme taksilla ensin Cardiffiin ja sieltä Megabus-linja-autolla maan pääkaupunkiin. Laukut painaa kukin tonnin, luulin kuolevani. Ja sitten joku idiootti lipunmyyjä alkaa Victorialla aukomaan päätään mulle hänen omasta virheestään... Ilman turvalasia olisin varmaan lyönyt sitä äijää!

Ilta kului sitten Lontoon Hyde Parkin "Winter Wonderland"-teemapuistoa ihastellen. Se on kyllä joka kerta näkemisen arvoinen.

Today was time to say goodbye to Merthyr Tydfil and travel to London. With out suitcases we took the taxi to Cardiff and from there we alighted Megabus to the capital of the country. My bags weigh a ton each, I thought I was going to die. And then some idiotic ticket clerk started to whine for something that was completely his own mistake... Without the safety glass I would've probably smacked that guy!


Evening was spent admiring the "Winter Wonderland" in London's Hyde Park. It is worth seeing every time.

Thu 06/12/12 - 95 years of Finnish independence

Tänään siis olemme juhlistaneet Suomen itsenäisyyspäivää katsomalla Presidentinlinnan juhlavastaanottoa. Jotkin puvut olivat oikein sieviä. Laskeskelin tuossa, että taitaa olla kolmas itsenäisyyspäivä putkeen, kun en ole Suomessa. Kävimme myös päivällä syömässä Frankie&Benny's:ssä Genevieven (joka siis oli puoli vuotta sitten Erasmus-vaihdossa Hämeenlinnassa) kanssa. Hanna-raukka epähuomiossa tilasi hieman liian tulista sapuskaa, mutta mua ei haitannut - vaihdoimme ateriamme. Lisäksi tytöt saivat palautettua viimeisetkin koulupaperinsa Suelle, Erasmus-koordinaattorillemme. Kämpällä on leppoisa tunnelma!

Today we've celebrated Finland's Independence day by watching the reception from Helsinki's presidential palace. Some of the dresses were really pretty. I counted that it's the third independence day in a row when I'm not in Finland. We also went to have lunch at Frankie&Benny's with Genevieve (who did her Erasmus exchange in Hämeenlinna half a year ago). Poor Hanna ordered slightly too spicy food by accident but I wasn't bothered by it - we swapped meals. And in addition, the girls managed to hand in their last school assignments to Sue, our Erasmus coordinator. The flat has a convivial feel!

Some information for the foreigners. I hope all Finns already know this stuff. But I must warn you that since war is usually at least 90% of propaganda, not everything they tell us (us Finns as well as them Russians or you other foreigners) is accurate. (But I'm pretty sure, the statistics below are true.)

Finland has been independent since 1917 when the country declared its independence from Russia, under which it had been a Grand Duchy. It all happened in the aftermath of the Russian revolutions where the emperor was overthrown by the Bolsheviks. That part of Finland's independence went pretty smoothly. What us Finns usually reminisce on our Independence day is the two wars against Russia during the 2nd World War. Here are some statistics of the Winter War, which you could say we won - even though we had to surrender some areas to Russia.

Then I think Finland got a little greedy and wanted back the areas it had lost after the Winter War. Finland made an alliance with Germany and therefore permitted Germany to use Finland as a base while the Germans attacked Russia. This obviously angered Russia which decided to put us back to our place. The Continuation War began and it didn't go as well as the Winter War.

Germany attacked Russia on the 22nd of June 1941, Finland joined the war on the 25th after Russia had bombed Helsinki. The cease-fire began on the 5th of September 1944. Then in the aftermath of the Continuation War we had to fight the Germans out and cede even more of Finnish territory to Russia but most importantly we retained our independence.

And that's what this day is all about. I'm proud of my country! While in Finland, I work at a rehabilitation institute for war veterans and disabled soldiers, so I'm reminded of this frequently. And unlike many other Finns I know, I'm proud of my country more than once a year. 

PS. It feels like forever since I've taken history in high school...

Wed 05/12/12 - Packing vol. 2

Kävimme Susannan kanssa kaupoilla, kun Hanna jäi peiton alle ja yritti parannella itseään Lontoota varten. Minä olen vakaasti päättänyt, että en vilustu ennen Suomeen paluuta. Varasimme myös Susannan kanssa MRSA-testiajat. Positiivisella mielellä odotamme negatiivista tulosta... Koulumme terveydenhoitaja halusi, että menemme ihan hänen vastaanotolleen asti kysymään tuloksia sitten 17. tai 18.12. Täytyy katsoa, jos on aikaa - muutoin tiedon saa kyllä puhelimella tai sähköpostillakin.

Susanna and I visited the shops while Hanna stayed underneath the blankets to get better for London. I have decided not to get sick before returning to Finland. We also booked our MRSA tests with Susanna. With a positive mindset we are expecting negative results... Our school nurse wanted us to especially go and see her to hear our results on the 17th or 18th of December. We'll see if we have time - otherwise we can get the results by phone or email.

Tue 04/12/12 - Packing

Ulkona paistaa aurinko, joten otamme raitista ilmaa avoinaisten ikkuinoiden kautta. Pyykkäämme ja pakkaamme tavaroitamme, sillä perjantaina pitäisi siirtyä täältä Merthyristä Lontooseen.

The sun's shining so we are enjoying the fresh air through open windows. Doing the laundry and packing our stuff because we should move from Merthyr Tydfil to London on Friday.

Tätä odotan kahden viikon päähän, mutta sitä ennen otan kaiken irti Lontoosta!

Mon 03/12/12 - Stress-less

Kävimme tänään palauttamassa koulutehtävän yliopistolle. Hanna ja Susanna pitivät tänä aamuna klo 3-4 aikoihin valmistuneen Suomi-esitelmän tammikuussa Hämeenlinnaan tuleville vaihto-opiskelijoille, Dawnille, Kirstylle ja Ellenille. Stressi väheni taas hieman. Seuraava aihe stressille: Pakkaaminen...

Sun 02/12/12 - 1st Advent Sunday

Tämä päivä meneekin jälleen koulutehtävien parissa, koska huomenna on viimeinen palautuspäivä. Hannalla ja Susannalla on projektityön valmistelua aiheesta "Suomi ja kulttuurishokin välttäminen", jonka he esittävät huomenna Suomeen tammikuussa tuleville vaihto-opiskelijoille. Minun ja Susannan on vielä tehtävä 2500-sanaiset esseemme loppuun. Oman esseeni suunnitelma muuttuu hieman koko ajan. Voihan pojat...

This day is spent again with school assignments because tomorrow is deadline. Hanna and Susanna are preparing their project of the topic "Finland and avoiding culture shock" which they shall present tomorrow to the exchange students coming to Finland next January. Susanna and I still need to finish our 2500-word-essays. The plans for my essay change a bit all the time. Oh man...

Sat 01/12/12 - December!

Joulukuu alkoi! Tässä asiassa on muutamia hyviä puolia:
- Movember päättyi ja ainakin osa viiksekkäistä miehistä siistiytyi tähän aamuun mennessä.
- Sai avata ensimmäisen joulukalenterin luukun.
- Joulu on ihan kohta ja sitten saan syödä kaikkea hyvää!

Kävimme tänään ostoksilla, sillä jouduimme kaikki hieman päivittämään matkalaukkutilannettamme, jotta saamme kaikki tavarat täältä Suomeen. Muutoin päivä meni hyvin paitsi, että joku muukin oli tänään huomannut, ettei ollut ostanut vielä joulukalenteria. Ainoat jäljellä olevat vaihtoehdot olivat Hello Kitty ja Disney-prinsessat. Ostin Hannalle Disney-suklaakalenterin ja Susannalle (vastoin kaikkia moraalisia periaatteitani) Hello Kitty -suklaakalenterin. Itse odotan joulua terveellisellä mielellä ilman suklaata...

Värjättiin Susannan hiukset Helsingillä. En tiennyt Helsingin olevan väri.

It's December! There are some positive aspects to this:
- Movember is finished and at least some men tidied themselves up by this morning.
- One got to open the first window on their advent calendar.
- It's almost Christmas and I get to eat all kinds of delicacies!

We went shopping today because we needed to update our luggage selection so we can take all our belongings back to Finland. Otherwise the day was fine except that someone else had also noticed that they hadn't got themselves an advent calendar. The only options left were Hello Kitty and Disney Princesses. I bought the Disney chocolate calendar for Hanna and Susanna received (against all my moral principles) the Hello Kitty chocolate calendar. Personally I shall wait for Christmas with a healthy attitude without chocolate...

We dyed Susanna's hair Helsinki. I didn't know Helsinki was a colour.

Fri 30/11/12 - Cardiff sightseeing

Tänään hyppäsimme junaan ja matkasimme kohti Cardiffia - melkein myöhästyimme aamun junasta. Kävimme Cardiff Bayssä ja Cardiffin linnassa sekä turistimyymälässä ostamassa joitain pieniä tuliaisia. Sää oli kirpsakan viileä ja sateeton. Illalla sitten myöhästyimmekin junasta, kun se päätti olla ajassaan. Seuraava juna olikin totutummin noin 8 minuuttia myöhässä. Ei se elämä aina mene kuin elokuvissa.

Susanna on yskinyt noin kolme viikkoa putkeen. Toivomme, ettei hänellä ole mitään vakavaa tai tappavaa tai tarttuvaa. Mun kurkkua toisinaan hieman kutittaa. Hanna googlettaa omia oireitaan ja tekee diagnoosia Wikipedian avulla. Todella vakuuttavaa...

Today we hopped on the train and travelled down to Cardiff - almost missed our train in the morning. We visited Cardiff Bay and Cardiff Castle and bought some little souvenirs from a tourist boutique. The weather was crispy and rainfree. In the evening we did miss the train when it decided to be on time. The next train was 8 minutes late which is more customary. Life doesn't always go as it does in the movies.

Susanna's been coughing for about three weeks now. We are hoping she doesn't have anything serious or fatal or contagious. My throat is itchy at times. Hanna is googling her own symptoms and making a diagnosis with the help of Wikipedia. Really reassuring...
