Thailand - day 61 (CM)

Aamulla alkoi sitten taas koulu.
Henna teki illan yliopistojuttuja. Minä luin hetken Raamattua ja menin suihkun kautta ajoissa sänkyyn. Milloin nukahdin? En kommentoi...

So the school started again this morning. I planned my lessons for the coming week during PE and read some chemistry. Today I taught only mathematics for three hours to Katriina and Rosita. For lunch we drove to KinLen with the family. I ordered a meal called “Nachos Suprsemes” and it was perfectly spiced up. Food is always good. For desert we went for an ice cream at Swensen’s, Millionaire Chocolate. There was a shop next to the ice cream place selling all kind of useless, little things. Rosita tried to convince me to buy a toy mouse with about 20 baht. From there Timo took me to Henna’s.
Rob stopped by in the evening and invited us to come and watch a movie at his house. Henna had university things to do so we just left the house to go to 7-Eleven. When we were coming from the shop the police had stopped the entire Hang Dong Road, which is a big road, and soon the Princess of Thailand drove past in her police escort doing who knows how many kilometers per hour. There were a bit less than ten police cars and an ambulance. Though it remains a mystery in which car the Princess was: in the black Hummer or for diversion in the ugly, red/green car. It was such a clever idea of us to cross the street right after the Princess had driven past. There were so many cars coming that we got stuck in the middle of the road for a long time. How come the cops didn’t stop the traffic for us?!
Henna did varsity for the evening. I read my Bible a bit and then after the shower went to bed early. What time I fell asleep? No comment...

Thailand - day 60 (CM)

Aamulla menimme kokoukseen klo 10. Timokin oli siellä. He olivat saapuneet edellisiltana Chiang Maihin.

We went to the church in the morning at 10am. Timo was there as well. They had arrived at Chiang Mai the previous evening. Henna was responsible of the Sunday school so I sat down by myself. Erik spoke in Thai and Mariaana, his wife, translated into English. They are also Australian Finnish. I left my Bible at Henna’s, for I’m an idiot. I also noticed that I’m too provocative – even towards God. Luckily He patiently understands me and showed his power again. I felt so great and light after the meeting.
We went to Sizzler’s for lunch. I wasn’t hungry at all at first but I think I visited the salad bar for at least seven times. Elina brought my last euros to the Airport Plaza and Erik helped me to exchange it. Here you have to fill all these forms for everything. The lady at the bank wrote by the address that “Hotel in Chiang Mai”. I don’t live in a hotel and not even in Chiang Mai, so Erik wrote down the name of the hotel where the Kids’ club was yesterday. After the currency exchange Erik took me and Henna home.
From there Henna left for Internet and I went to my room to sleep a little. At first I didn’t fall asleep but then I slept pretty well. The evening was spent talking and we went to bed late again. The work starts again tomorrow.

Thailand - day 59 (CM)

Aamulla oli siis Kids’ club alkaen kello 10:00. Menimme sinne Duanin mopolla, minä ajoin. Melkein kuolimme! No emme ihan.
On KUUMA!
Australialaisten suosima triviaalikysymys: Missä on Tasmania? Tai mikä on Australian pääkaupunki? Daa-a…
No, katsoimme elokuvan sijaan Hennan valokuvia. Olen traumatisoitunut lopun elämääni... Juttelimme taas myöhään. Mielenkiintoista kyllä, miten ajattelemme samalla tavoin monesta asiasta. Pelottavaakin välillä.

So in the morning we had the Kids’ club at 10am. We got there by Duan’s moped, I drove. We nearly died! No, not really. The moped is new and in good shape, so it was easy to drive. I just love the Thai traffic. Henna didn’t enjoy the speed for it’s not very steady to sit in the back of the moped so I wasn’t allowed to drive more than 70km/h. I’m bitter…
Thai kids are lovely and pretty. And obviously smart: 2-3-year-old Nanthip knew how to use my camera. Many adults don’t know how to use my camera tough it is very simple! Henna taught English for the kids and they played different games. They raced fetching picture cards according to what Henna had told them to pick et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. I had to count the score and I was out like a snowman at times. We didn’t drive back to Henna’s anymore but took the songthaew.
It’s HOT! A guy came to fix Henna’s air/con 1,5 hours later than agreed. Everything in Thailand is so sanuk (=easygoing)! The air conditioning worked when we left for the Airport Plaza. We went to the Internet, KFC and Swensen’s. When we returned to Henna’s the air/con didn’t work anymore. Another sticky night ahead.
In the evening we left for the Night Bazaar with Rob and Alex, local Australians. It was very difficult to change the language to nothing but English for I’ve been able to mix Finnish and English however I’ve wanted with Henna. So called frog ladies are infuriating. They move amongst the people with their little wooden frogs trying to sell them. The sound that the frogs make is really irritating. When Henna was at the Night Bazaar for the first time Rob told in Thai to a few of the frog ladies that Henna likes those frogs and five women had started to follow her immediately. Funny… I bought Adda’s “fake crocs”, 150 baht, and a scarf, 60 baht. I was also thinking that a digital SLR camera wouldn’t be such a bad idea. A real one, 40,000 baht.
On our way back I talked to Alex and we lay in the back of the songthaew on our seats as Rob drove and Henna wanted the air conditioned space in the front. Alex didn’t know exactly where Finland was or that there really was a country called Estonia. She knew Norway from the Norwegian friends. I knew that Americans had problems with their geography but that Aussies too?! They don’t have compulsory geography at school, I was told. A popular trivial question by the Australians: Where is Tasmania? Or what is the capital of Australia? Well duh… Or what do you think, Maija?
In the evening we watched a movie called The Perfect Storm with Henna. It didn’t play all the way though and was cut right where the actual storm started. I don’t how it ends. It was Rob’s DVD and later when we asked about it, he said that “yeah, it irritates me too when it cuts like that”. He couldn’t tell that to us earlier! Well, instead of the movie we browsed through Henna’s photos. I’m traumatized for life... We talked so late again. It’s interesting how we think alike with so many things. Also scary at times.

Thailand - day 58 (CM)

No joo... Beth on Mae Hong Sonissa asusteleva kanadalainen nainen. Tietääkö joku on Helsingissä tosiaan Starbucks?!!
Oletteko laulajia?”
Mun suomen kieli on muuten kauheassa jamassa. Henna on hieno ihminen. Kaunis on muuten todella vahva sana.
Aamulla on Kids’ club. Mennään Hennan kämppäkaverin mopolla. Jaiks!

Visa is settled until the 28th of April. The whole renewing thing took 15 minutes and I flew to Chiang Mai for that. Oh well… I proved that the circles are really small around here when I saw Beth at the Airport Plaza’s Starbucks. Beth is a Canadian woman living in Mae Hong Son. She’s been visiting home for the last month and has now finally returned back. Does anyone know if there really is a Starbucks in Helsinki?!! If so, it must be pretty expensive place…
We walked around Airport Plaza and desperately searched for KFC. I don’t know if it was the hunger that made us blind, but we didn’t find it (1st floor, by the aquarium). With 14 baht we took the yellow songthaew back to Henna’s. Yellow ones work a bit like buses. They drive a certain route and are fairly cheap. The red ones are private and more expensive (you must bargain) but they’ll take you wherever you want them to so a bit like taxis.
Erik, who’s responsible of Henna’s stay in Thailand, took Henna to the dentist’s in the evening. For lack of other activities I went with them. They served all three of us water while we were waiting at Dentaland for Henna’s appointment. On the way back we took a songthaew from Erik’s house. This songthaew was unfortunately full so we had to stand in the back of the car. We nearly died! I even tried to take some photos as well. Awesome!
The thai massage of a massage school was a wonderful experience. 1 hour for 100 baht. It was also nice for the women that massaged us were clearly older and chubbier than us so we didn’t have to fear that we would hear some nasty remarks on our looks. Only: ”What a beautiful, soft, white skin. Are you singers?”
My Finnish skills are horrible at the moment. They’ve been so for a while and getting worse because of my Finglish company. We talked until about 1am with Henna. Henna is a great person. It was really instructive to realise that beautiful people have their problems too and some of them are exactly the same as mine. Beautiful is a very strong word by the way. Henna said that she considered me pretty. Oh, I’m going to be all obnoxious and egocentric from now on... “No, really…”
But now I must sleep. It’s Kids’ club in the morning. We are taking Henna’s roommate’s moped there. Yaiks! Elina informed me that the school is to be transferred to Chiang Mai for next week. I’ll lose my flight tickets but it’s nice to stay. I can probably hitch a lift back with the Kivinen’s. This room is probably still available at Henna’s for next week if Phon doesn’t return.

Egosentrinen, näettekö! / Egocentric, see!

Thailand - day 57 (MHS-Chiang Mai)

Koulu meni suht nopeasti. Uuni ei suostunut toimimaan, joten kotitaloustunnit hieman venyivät. Kemian tunnilta vapautin Katriinan ajoissa.
Isot, hikiset miehet puskee toisiaan vastaan soikion pallon vuoksi. Mahtavaa! Springboks on paras!
Kävimme illallisella KinLenissä, joka on siis suomalaisen pariskunnan omistama ravintola. Tapasimme siellä paikan suomalaisen omistajan. Outoa, kun pystyy aivan tuntemattomalle, sattumalta tapaamalleen ihmiselle puhumaan suomea.
Henna sanoi, etten saa huomenna herätä kirkon rukouskokousta varten. Tottelen käskyä. Ei haittaa. Olenkin ollut melko väsynyt. Chiang Maissakin on kauhean kuuma, eikä huoneessani ole ilmastointia. Saa nähdä selviänkö sunnuntaihin asti.

The school went by rather quickly. The oven refused to work so the home ec lessons became longer than scheduled. From chemistry I released Katriina a bit earlier. Everyone’s having head aches and nauseous feelings because of the smoke. I left for Chiang Mai in the afternoon. Luckily the planes flew. I called Henna at 2:30pm when I knew for sure that the flight would be on time. I gave her an hour to be at the airport. My conscience felt a bit bad but she made it with her friend, Chris. Henna is Australian Finn and lives in Chiang Mai at the moment. We met in Keuruu in January. Great person, didn’t leave me at the airport even for the short notice.
We stopped by Tesco and BigC on the way to Henna’s. It’s wonderful how the shelves are full. I was like a complete idiot when I stared at the shelves and how I was awed by the vastness of the store. It’s so great to be in a city! In Finland I’m planning to go to visit Hämeenlinna’s Citymarket and its sweet section. They have a whole huge wall covered with candy bags and I’ll just wonder how come they can have so many sweet packets to waste on the wall. In Mae Hong Son we’ve had troubles finding salt though the town is the capital of the province.
So shortly Henna lives with two Thai girls in Chiang Mai. The other girl, Phon, is away so I’m staying in her room and the other girl, Duan, has a cute little dog. It’s Shih Tzu, I think, and it’s called Chao Ban (=villager). It gets washed daily so it’s always clean. Unfortunately it’s also still a puppy so “accidents” happen.
In the evening we were supposed to walk along the Hang Dong market but Henna’s another Aussie friend, Rob came to have a massage. He was, like Henna put it well, “a boy in a man’s body”. He likes cricket. Unfortunatley since South Africa I’ve been more of a rugby person. Big, sweaty men pushing against each other for the sake of an oval ball. Awesome! Springboks rule!
For supper we went to KinLen, which is a restaurant ran by a Finnish couple. We met the Finnish owner as well. It was weird to be able to speak Finnish to a random stranger.
Henna told me that I wasn’t allowed to get up for the church’s prayer meeting tomorrow. I shall obey. It doesn’t matter. I’ve been a bit tired anyway. It’s awfully hot in Chiang Mai as well and my room doesn’t have air-conditioning. We shall see whether I’ll survive until Sunday.

Thailand - day 56 (MHS)

Tämä savu syövyttää aivot. Hi-hehe-haahaahaa..
Elinalla kuulokkeet hiljeni kesken Skypen, minulla kesken musiikin kuuntelun. Eri kuulokkeet, eri tietokone, sama verkko, sama ongelma, sattui melkein samaan aikaan. Sattumaa? Ehdotuksia, miten korjata asia?
Kirjoitan taas lisää, kun ajatus alkaa taas luistaa paremmin. Lähden tosin Chiang Maihin huomenna. Palaan sunnuntaina.

This smoke rots my brain. Hih-eh-hahaha.. Virpi-Maria mentioned during the lunch that the air quality levels are dangerous. Just when we are supposed to stay inside, Elina and I left for town for two hours. It was hilarious! I did read about this smoke thing on the newspaper afterwards and put some of it here as well. You can find it in the end of this post after the picture.
The headphones went mute all of a sudden and they refuse to work. Elina's headset stopped functioning while talking on Skype and mine while I was listening to music. Different headset, different computer, same network, same problems, occured almost at the same time. Coincidence? Any ideas on how to fix it?
I'll write more when my mind starts functioning again. I'm leaving for Chiang Mai tomorrow by the way. Will be back on Sunday..

Alamme hiljalleen oppia paikalliset tavat:
Haimme paluumatkalla vielä Salweenista take awayt.
Kuvasta puutun myös minä, sillä Elina kyytsäsi.

We are slowly learning the local customs:
A moped can carry as much stuff as you want.
On the way back we still fetched take aways from Salween.
The picture is also missing me, for Elina was driving us both.

Tässä otteita Bangkok Post –sanomalehden artikkelista:
* Hänen majesteettinsa kuningas on osoittanut huolensa koskien pohjoisen usvatilannetta ilmanlaadun lähentyessä vaarallisia lukeamia useissa pohjoisen provinsseissa.
* Usvanhäiritsemistä provinsseista Mae Hong Son on joutunut kokemaan tilanteen rankimpana metsäpalojen vuoksi.

Here are some clips of the article in the Bangkok Post today:
* His Majesty the King has voiced concern over the haze situation in the North as the air quality in several northern provinces is poised to reach danger levels.
* Among the haze-affected provinces, Mae Hong Son has been hardest hit due to wildfires.
* The level of dust in the province was yesterday measured at 134 microgrammes per cubic metre, higher than the safe level of 120 μg/m³.
* At the same time, the province's air quality level was measured at 106 on the Air Quality Index, which is higher than the safety level of 100.
* Triroj Nawamarat, manager of Thai Airways International office in Mae Hong Son, said THAI had had to cancel a flight scheduled to land at Mae Hong Son airport at 11am yesterday due to poor visibility at the airport, which was measured at 1,200 metres, far below the safe visibility level for commercial aircraft of between 3,000 and 3,500 metres.

Thailand - day 55 (MHS)

Suihkutin yläluokan ötökkämyrkyllä pääsiäisloman aikana ja tuloksia alkoi tänään näkyä. Jee, jee! Eläköön Baygon! / I sprayed the upper classroom with bug repellent during the Easter holidays and today we had some results. Oh yeah! Go Baygon!

I also saw my first local tokay gecko. It was causing terrible noise last night and today we found it on the school wall cooling itself. I was told that if harassed they can attach to your skin so tightly it's a definite stop by the hospital if you want it off. The one in question was about 25 cm long.

Pahoitteluni... / A guy came by to check our Internet and updated it to be faster. Still at the moment I can't upload a single photo here anymore. Apologies...

Thailand - day 54 (MHS)

ILOISTA PÄÄSIÄISMAANANTAITA! / GREAT EASTER MONDAY!

Oh, how I miss malted Easter pudding at the moment! Mom better had remembered to save some for me for the end of next month. I’m already going home in the end of next month. Can’t believe it. I’m sad I didn’t fly to Malesia on Sunday to watch the F1 race. Timo mentioned it but I should’ve gotten more excited. Well at least Kimi won. And the McLaren drivers, Kovalainen and Hamilton did better than Heidfeld and Alonso – so the complaint and punishment after the qualification had no significance. Though Kovalainen could’ve been second…
Elina came back today so the life’s getting back to normal and the school starts tomorrow again. They’d told her at the airport to listen to the announcements since one earlier plane to Mae Hong Son had left 4 hours late. During the dry season here there’s so much smoke in the air that the pilots don’t see where to land. Let’s hope the air gets clearer and that they won’t cancel my flight on Thursday.

I messed up my
sleeping rhythm last night/this morning pretty properly. Thanks for all of you who made it possible!

Thailand - day 53 (MHS-Rak Thai-MHS)

HYVÄÄ PÄÄSIÄISSUNNUNTAITA! / HAPPY EASTER SUNDAY!

Rak Thaissa asuu paljon kiinalaisia.

Easter morning began at 6am with a sunrise service at the campfire place. After that the people spread all over the horpak area searching the eggs that had been painted and hidden during Saturday. I had never eaten my Easter eggs with salt. After breakfast we left for Rak Thai (rak=love, thai=freedom). Rak Thai was actually a very beautiful place in the middle of the mountains. By the church there was also a pretty large pond.
At the moment there’s only a small group who gather in Rak Thai’s church and the building is tiny. We were able to fill every seat with the people from Mae Hong Son, who arrived by two cars, and with some locals. The pastor of Mae Hong Son, Zairot preach
ed. He spoke mm. about the meaning of Easter, how without Christmas there would be no Easter but how without Easter the Christmas would loose its meaning. After the service we ate - a custom which I like.
There are quite many Chinese in Rak Thai. They have a variety of China shops there. One of my friends might have been interested… Oh and Maija (if you still prefer to read this blog in English)! I bought a Chinese tea set today! What do you say about that?! You others probably don’t see the awesomeness in it but the set is pretty nevertheless.
When we came back from Rak Thai, I was feeling so sleepy that I just wanted to take a nap. Now I’m much better. Have to fix a few last-minute things and then maybe go for a walk before dark.

Thailand - day 52 (MHS)

Elina antoi kuitenkin minulle luvan käyttää omaa kannettavaansa. Olenko muuten kertonutkaan teille Elinasta kunnolla? No tiivistetysti: Elina on varmaan maailman mahtavin ihminen tällä hetkellä koko maailmassa.
No joo…
Kylään johtava tie oli aika huonossa kunnossa. Tiesittekö muuten, että punaisia banaaneja on olemassa? Minä en ennen kuin tänään kuulin. Joka tapauksessa, menimme siis sinne kareenikylään. Se ei ollut kovin suuri. Hassua, kuinka pikkulapset puhuivat ainoastaan kareenia, eivätkä osanneet lainkaan thaita, mutta tavaroiden hinnat he tiesivät englanniksi. Annan valokuvien kertoa lopun. Kuvia tulee lisää jahka ehtii.
Illalla menimme Salween Riveriin päivälliselle. Palautin lautasen ja sain 50 bahtiani takaisin. Shan-alkupaloja, Chicken Parmaginaa ja 7-Elevenin kautta kotiin. Tajusin vasta nyt, että Timo maksoi ruokani. Kehveli…

The Internet's working again on Elina's computer. There might be something wrong with the switch for I can't get the connection to work in the classroom. Elina gave me permission, however, to use her laptop. Have I told you about Elina? Well to summarise it: Elina is probably the greatest person in the world at the moment. And I'm probably one of the worst Internet-addicts…
I woke up today at 6:15am. After a small breakfast and shower I went back to bed only to wake up again at 9:15am. I just lay on my bed until Virpi-Maria stopped by to ask if I wanted to visit the Longneck Karen village. We left 10:20am.
I saw my first water buffalos today. Water buffalo is kwai in Thai and it’s also a nasty nickname. Very useful thing to know… Yes well…
The road to the village was quite dodgy. Did you know, by the way, that there are also red bananas? I didn’t until I heard about it today. Well anyway, we went to the Karen village. It wasn’t that big. It was funny how the little kids couldn’t speak any Thai, only Karen language, but they knew the prices of the items in English. I’ll let the photos to tell the rest. There will be more later.
In the evening we went to Salween River for dinner. I returned the plate and got my 50 baht back. Shan-starters, Chicken Parmagina and home via 7-Eleven. I only now realised that Timo paid for my meal. Dangit…

Kwai (vesipuhveli/water buffalo)

Thailand - day 51 (MHS)

RAUHALLISTA PITKÄPERJANTAITA! / PEACEFUL GOOD FRIDAY!

I’m all alone: Internet’s still not working, Elina is away and I’ve got a tummy bug of some sort so I really don’t have much energy to do anything. To say the least I don’t feel like spreading this, whatever ‘this’ is. I did have to do my laundry today even though it’s a Christian holiday. Luckily here in Thailand it’s just a normal Friday so it wasn’t that bad on my self-conscious. Though I must admit it was totally against my principles. But you know: When in Rome…

Thailand - day 50 (MHS)

Kävin lainaamassa Kivisiltä kaksi DVD:tä: Kikin lähettipalvelun ja Naapurini Totoron (Tonari no Totoro).
No joka tapauksessa...

Elina left for Chiang Mai to spend her Easter holiday there. I’m going there next weekend to renew my visa so this holiday I’m just chilling at home. The day passed with a bit shortened school day, lunch and then coffee and some gingerbread cake, Katriina baked in the morning during our home ec lesson, at the Kivinen’s residence. After coffee we took Elina to the airport and on the same visit to town we stopped at 7-Eleven and Kad Gam which is a local general store but it’s a bit far from the main road (maybe 500m) so I go there rather seldom. Bad excuse, I know… I just love 7-Eleven so MUCH!
I borrowed two DVDs from the Kivinen’s: Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro). I was going to watch one today and the other one tomorrow but the story doesn’t end here. I managed to start Kiki for about 15 minutes when there was a knock on my door. There were two ‘virpoja’s all dressed up and with their beautifully decorated branches.
>>‘Virpominen’ is a tradition among children. On Palm Sundays kids dress up as Easter witches or bunnies or something and go from door to door with sprigs of willow in their hands. As a reward for the decorated branches they give to people and after reciting a special verse they are given sweets or money. Sort of like a Finnish form of ‘trick or treating’.<<
It’s not Palm Sunday but I didn’t mind. Maundy Thursday is good enough. I like the whole tradition with ‘virpoja’s. Takes me back… The girls received their sweets and stayed for a while to chat before leaving. Poor Janette had a sweater as a part of her bunny costume. The climate hasn’t changed that dramatically and so it’s still hot!
Then the girls left. Timo came by to inform that the Internet is not working… surprise, again! But the light in the ceiling of our outdoor kitchen is working. It never switches on in the evenings but the next day between 11am and 1pm. We decided with Timo that if it works the whole day and doesn’t go off in the evening, we can let it be on day and night. And now the clock is rather late, already tomorrow actually and it just still keeps lighting up the outdoor kitchen.
After the ‘virpoja’s I continued Kiki’s delivery service and just when I reached the ending song there was a knock on my door again. Rosita and Janette had changed their clothes and came back with a bottle of juice and three pieces of the gingerbread cake. We ate and then we decided to watch Totoro – actually the girls decided and I just didn’t argue. I naturally called the girls’ mom to ask for permission. Watching two Hayao Miyazaki movies in one day is quite enough, though they were entertaining.
Now I’m in the classroom again being harassed by the cockroaches. Today I actually, to my shame, took such fright that I let out a sound. Disgusting creatures!! What useful stuff do they have to do here in this world?! Well in any case… I hope the Internet works again soon because it hasn’t really for four days. Timo was going to complain about it. I could at least publish these things to my blog. I also wrote the missing days on my trip to Bangkok and Cha Am – if someone is interested.

Thailand - day 49 (MHS)

Vaikeaa, vaikeaa...

I've been suffering from a slight head ache the whole day. Yes, mom, I've been drinking enough and don't worry, mom, I'm leaving the computer any minute now. I've also noticed that it's actually very complicated to set the air/con just right. I've settled with "almost there" -temperatures but I'm getting fussier all the time. Difficult, difficult...
And I also sent my first university application today. Now I still need to decide where else I'm going to apply to - in other words: what do I actually want to study. Difficult, difficult...

Thailand - day 48 (MHS)

It's been a regular day. Though it rained and I heard thunder as well in the afternoon so there were power cuts and the internet went down for the whole evening, but at least the temperature has gotten to bearable degrees. We went to town and Thai Airways’ office quickly and I bought my tickets to Chiang Mai for next week’s weekend. I have to renew my visa for the last month at the immigration office there.
I also got to enjoy Jane’s foot parlour’s facial massage and it was a home visit to say the least. Lying on my own bed, 11 baht for the one-hour treatment. The actual massage was 15 baht but I bought a discount coupon for 1 baht and so I got 5 baht off. The discount coupon can be used 6 times and each time I receive 5 baht discount. Handy… I was feeling so languid afterwards and I fell into a deep, relaxing sleep. I don’t think I’ve slept that well during my whole stay here in Thailand – or even for a long time in Finland.

Thailand - day 47 (MHS)

Sanuk, sanuk...
Valitettavasti on tullut myös turvallisuusvaroituksia poliisin taholta. Verhot täytyy pitää kiinni, ovissa tuplalukot, valoja päällä, että näyttää siltä kuin asunnossa oikeasti asuttaisiinkin. Täällä kävi yksi ilta joku kokeilemassa tämän luokkahuoneen ovea joskus klo 23 aikaan, kun olin vielä täällä. Kukaan tällä hoopakilla asuva se ei ollut. Mene ja tiedä... Joten turvallisuusasioissa saa muistaa. Muuten täällä menee tosi hyvin!

Ah, the life is so great. The internet is not working at all today. Let's see if I cab publish this message. The connection works for 10 seconds then it doesn't for then seconds and then it does again for 10 seconds and so on... The heat's still here. It was +37 degrees Celcius yesterday according to Virpi-Maria. The air/con is set on 27 degrees so it would be "nice and cool" and so it is possible to do somethin - other than lie half-dead on the bed.
We went to Salween River to have Khao Soy with Elina. 40 baht and definitely the best Khao Soy in Thailand (and so the whole world)!!! I ordered also a take-away pizza for tomorrow's schedule is bit unclear concerning the dinner. We yesterday they didn't have pizza bases which they did today but no pizza boxes. I got my pizza on a regular plate for 50 baht deposit which I'll get back once I return the plate.
It took quite long for the food to be ready so we thought that meanwhile we could walk down to 7-Eleven (which here in Thailand are all open 24/7). We walked out of the restaurant without paying even for the Khao Soy we had already eaten. The only guarantee they had for us returning was that we said we would. It took about 20 minutes easily for us to do our "shopping". The food was ready when we returned. We paid and left. Sanuk, sanuk...
Unfortunately we've also had security warnings from the police. The cutrains must be drawn, the doors double-locked and some lights ought to be switched on so that it looks like there's really someone living in the apartment. The other night someone tried the door leading to this classroom where this, "my" computer, is while I was still here sometime around 11pm. It was no one from this horpak. Who knows... So it would be appreciated if you remembered me with all these security issues. Otherwise things are real great!

Thailand - day 46 (MHS)

On niiin kuuma!

It's soo hot. I still can't get into my email so please be patient. The window just downloads, but the connection has been really slow anyway so maybe that's the reason. I'll try again later.

Saturday, 15 March 2008

Thailand - day 45 (MHS)

Seitsemän vuotta täällä maapallon laidalla on kuulemma tarpeeksi.

It's amazing how this climate can drain all your energy! We watched Charlie and Chocolate Factory with Elina and other than that we've haven't been up to anything really. We probably should go to town and eat something sometime... We'll probably meet with Inger-Lise, a Norwegian working here. Well she's actually moving to Chiang Mai to the civilization within a month. Seven years here in the outskirts of the world is enough, I hear.

Thailand - day 44 (MHS-Pang Ma Pha-MHS)

Tietokone toimii todella kummallisesti.

The computer's working very strangely. It won't allow me to open my emails for the moment - maybe tomorrow. It's also so warm in the room and the air/con is not being very willing to co-operative. It's so not my day today! And the cockroaches...
We went to visit Pang Ma Pha's "horpak" (=student hostels) today. They had the end of the school year party tonight. It's an hour drive on the horrible mountain road. I was feeling pretty good the whole time though, I was rather surprised myself. There we first had supper which consisted of sticky rice, chicken and som tam (spicy papaya salad). Then there was Sprite to drink and watermelon for dessert. No forks or knives or spoons involved so we ate with fingers. Though it was my first time without cutlery, it went pretty well. Oh, and the sticky rice was packed inside a banana leaf. It was so Thai! Brilliant! It made the evening much more bearable since I didn't understand a single word the entire time.

Thursday, 13 March 2008

Thailand - day 43 (MHS-Nai Soi-MHS)

Paluumatkalla olisin toivonut autoon ilmastoinnin sijasta lämmitystä.

The student hostels of Nai Soi had their end of school year festivities today so we drove there in the evening. The children staying at the Nai Soi hostels are younger than those in Mae Hong Son where some go to high school or technical school. The programme anyway included singing, the graduating students each had a small speeche, they were given a present: a picture of an angel protecting two kids playing on a bridge (I love those!), and then in the end we ate. They had Khao Soy. Timo also spoke in English which Phi Thai interpreted to Thai. On the way back I was wishing the car had heating instead of air/con.

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

Thailand - day 42 (MHS)

Again another day is behind. Today we had a "taksvärkkipäivä" (a day's work). It's a day for the students to go and work - no "real" school. Usually kids in Finland do it for 10€ which goes for charity of some kind. For us it was voluntary work. We spent the day washing pillows and raking the garden around the student hostels. I was there also with the girls though usually teachers in Finland don't participate. Katriina had home ec in the afternoon though so I supervised as she made pizza in that nice heat. Luckily the results were great again so I was happy. So now when I look back, today was spent working, eating and talking. Almost an ideal day - except for the work of course...

Tuesday, 11 March 2008

Thailand - day 41 (MHS)

Pää on hieman oudon tuntuinen. Laitan tänne nyt vain sattumanvaraisia kuvia koulusta.

Elina was sick today so I taught the school by myself today. Head is feeling a bit weird. I’ll just put some random photos of the school here now.

Thailand - day 40 (BKK-Chiang Mai-Mae Hong Son)

Takaisin Mae Hong Sonissa ollaan.

So I am back in Mae Hong Son. Very tired but happy. Will write more later. But for all of you out there still emailing me to my Luukku address, THERE'S NO POINT. I had received 1599 spam emails and 3 real ones last week. I usually delete everything without even checking them. I only keep the address working for some special occasions and to write it on places where I know will send me some more spam. So please update my email address to Gmail.

Miehet…
Lento Chiang Maihin sujui ongelmitta.
Tapasin Elinan terminaalissa Black Canyon Coffeessa.

Björkbacka family, who lives close to the school, had guests from Finland who were on their way to Krabi. Their flight was scheduled 40 minutes later than mine from Suvarnabhumi so Joni took all of us to the airport and then left with Jukka to Silom to fetch Jukka’s glasses and to “buy a couple necessary items as well” like men seem to express it. Note the word ‘necessary’. Men…
The flight to Chiang Mai went without trouble. I left immediately to Airport Plaza to get ice cream from Swensen’s. Chocolate Millionaire with rock@heart, reversible chocolate, chocolate and sticky chewy chocolate is so yummy! After Swensen’s I walked across the street to Rimping. I don’t know if it was just an excellent time of the day to cross the street on foot or has Bangkok made me understand the meaning of traffic jam somehow different. Tuk-tuk and songthaew drivers were very eager to offer me a ride even though I said that mai pen rai (it’s alright), I don’t need one.
On my way back to the airport I realised that one must have all liquids over 100ml in the checked luggage. Throughout the whole time in Rimping I just kept thinking about this fact until the last minute when I decided to buy a 250ml aroma shower gel. Luckily it didn’t turn out to be a problem. I just had to X-ray it again in a small box given to me and then they put it into the baggage deck of the aeroplane. It’s so lovely when things work out.
I met Elina at the Black Canyon Coffee inside the terminal. What did I mention about not being nice if you get sick during the holiday? Elina had been suffering from flu since Wednesday and she still didn’t look too well. Tomorrow she’s going to rest so I’ll be teaching on my own.
It was great to come back to Mae Hong Son. The caretaker of the student hostels, Pattana or Phii Boy came to pick us up from the airport. Quite an amount of stuff we’ve managed to gather during the holiday. Elina had been forced to buy a new, larger suitcase for herself. It’s like that when you don’t really get to go see the civilization that often and you suddenly you have more shops, than 7-Eleven, to choose from. And the supplies the shops offer are so versatile that you can’t learn them off by heart – unlike the situation with the two 7-Elevens in Mae Hong Son.

Thailand - day 39 (CA-Bangkok)

Check-out olikin klo 12, vaikka meille ihan varmasti sanottiin, että kello 13.

We went to visit the pool once more in the morning. I kept all my clothes on and stayed in the shade. And I didn’t stay by the pool that long anyway when I already left for 7-Eleven and then returned to our apartment to add some more lotion on my skin. Tomi and Jukka came up with Saukkonen sunburn scale which is between 0 and 5. I was 4,3 so you make your conclusions of my pain from that… Like the Finnish saying states: “Of a stupid head the whole body must suffer.”
Check-out was at noon though they had told us 1pm. It however wasn’t a problem in the end. It’s so nice here in Thailand that most of the things can be sorted by talking (and at the latest by paying) – anything from the unofficial business to official.
We stopped at an Outlet Mall on our way back. I needed a new strapless bra for my back was so badly burnt it couldn’t bear to be touched. This is so not cool anymore…!! And Joni even pressed his thumb on my shoulder. My vision went blurry but I guess this colour will get better and then the skin will start peeling, I guess. At least I have spent lotion on it.
We took a detour through some villages for there was a massive traffic jam on the main road. I also watched some older episode of American Idol with Jukka and Tomi from Jukka’s laptop. It’s so nice that I didn’t feel bad at all when the roads were so straight. Joni even asked me a few times how I was coping in the back seat since everybody else always gets motion-sickness when sitting there. I must’ve gotten some effective hyposensitization when we drove to Chiang Mai by car.We stopped once more in Bangkok before home at KFC where I ate my lunch/supper – I hadn’t been that hungry before. I hadn’t had KFC’s delicious chicken burger since South Africa and it took me back. And yes, guys, I recalled ”the puddle” as well...

Thailand - day 38 (CA)

Jäin siis tunniksi voitelemaan itseäni After Sunilla.

I was the first to wake up which was nice considering the open location of my bed. I got to take my time brushing my teeth and getting dressed before the others woke up. Around 11am we left for the beach. I already knew beforehand what was going to happen but I thought to just let it. I did put on sun screen but… I wasn’t prepared to burn this badly though. In the evening the others left for a massage. Even my feet are so sore that I couldn’t even go to a foot massage. So I stayed behind for an hour adding After Sun all over myself.
Then one hour later I left for the massage parlour to meet the others. We tried on some sunglasses with Emma: Ray-Ban, Levi’s, Gucci, Dior… and all less than 200 baht. Quite an offer but which we didn’t take. The marker place where we headed next was smaller than it had been the day before when we just quickly drove past it. Jukka and Joni bought rather classy undergarments. We had a plan to go to the restaurant below the sign stating “Thailand’s best burgers” but they had their bosses birthday part there and served only drinks and there was also a live performer. We skipped the live music, even though he just started Mambo no. 5 by Lou Bega, and went to the restaurant by the condotel like yesterday.

Suomalaiset tulee rannalle ja piiloutuu telttaan.
Teltat on kuulemma kova sana Australian rannoilla.
The Finns come to the beach and hide in the tent.
Well tents on the beach are very hip in Australia.

Rannalla oli porukkaa: thailaisia vaatteet päällä,
turisteja pienissä uima-asuissaan ja hevosia. Aurinko
valitettavasti meni pilveen iltapäivää kohden.
The beach was not empty: There were Thais in t-shirt
and shorts, tourists in their small swimwear and horses.
Unfortunately the sun left us towards the afternoon.

Thailand - day 37 (BKK-Cha Am)

We left three hours later than the planned 12:00pm. We left with an aim to reach Cha Am and to find a place to stay the night. Otherwise we would just put up our tent by the beach and sleep there. So there were Joni, Emma, Jukka, Tomi and I. We drove through the whole Cha Am, found that Hilton was way too far from the civilisation and then returned to one condotel called Saeng Thong. It was pretty big building, probably built sometime in the beginning of the 90’s and it offered an OK swimming pool.
We got an apartment which had two bedroom and rather large living/dining room area. It cost 1500baht per night so 300 baht per person. We even got two keys. Luxury like this wasn’t offered to us even in the three-star The Park hotel in Chiang Mai during the Finland-conference. The boys moved my bed to the living room and as a blanket I received a huge green towel. Otherwise the room was nice – if you didn’t mind the weird smell. Maybe the air/con will have some effect on this sooner or later…
Right next to the condotel there’s a cosy restaurant where they serve really nice chicken with cashew nuts. And the waiters were really nice too.

Vanha kuva huoneistohotellistamme.
Nykyään ranta on täynnä hotelleja ym.
An old picture of our condotel.
Nowadays the beach is full of hotels and such.

Thailand - day 36 (BKK)

Löysin Terri Blackstockin kirjasarjan toisenkin osan koulun kirjastosta. Jee!

I found the second part of the series by Terri Blackstock in the library. Yay! And I also read that second book today. It was really entertaining. The day’s been rather lazy and on purpose really. I think I have to gather some energy during this holiday. And also for the days are so bloody hot!
We are leaving for Cha Am tomorrow though we don’t have a hotel booked or found yet. Hopefully we’ll find something suitable, good quality and cheap, once we are there. If there’s nothing in Cha Am we shall continue our way to Hua Hin. And then to Dolphin Bay and we might end up finding ourselves in Phuket. We’ll see…
We went swimming in the evening. So scrupulous with all kinds of receipts. There’s no escaping the bureaucracy. Right after we entered the building we paid for the swimming, then we went to change and then we had to show the receipt of payment before we were allowed into the pool. The hair must be under a swimming cap if it’s even longish. Ponytail is not enough.
It’s also funny to see how the way people think is so different compared to anything else what I have learnt. I swam half a kilometre. Usually you swim vertically across the pool. This was the most common method tonight as well but then there was this one man, about 45 years old (just the age for älynväläys like these) who had decided to swim the pool horizontally. I got tired with this kind of swimming that needed so much concentrating so I ended up throwing Silja, one of the Thaisuko students, around the pool.
The head’s been aching a bit today as well though not too badly: I could watch an American Idol episode. And I’m also feeling hungry all the time. Oon, the cook of the school, makes excellent food. So I don’t know if this feeling of hunger is physical or just psychological. She makes yoghurt, rye bread and even korvapuusti, Finnish specialty buns. I’ve just realised how I haven’t learnt practically any Thai so far. I’m not in contact with the locals that much.
Oon couldn’t speak any other language than Thai. We have somehow managed to communicate though. She has found out the names of the Kivinen’s kids and how many siblings I have. She also now knows that I’m going to stay in Bangkok until Monday morning (though we needed Silja to translate this a bit) and that I believe the weather in Bangkok is hotter than in Mae Hong Son. She also knows that I like coffee and ripe mangos so she offers them to me whenever possible.
But Thai is so complicated! Tonal languages are way above my understanding. How can a word have five different meanings depending on the tone? For example the word ‘maa’ means ‘come’ when using the middle tone, ‘horse’ when the tone is high and ‘dog’ when the tone rises… And then there are also the falling tone and the low tone. I mean how can you learn all of those?!

Thailand - day 35 (BKK)

Näiden perusteella voitte alkaa suunnitella omaa Thaimaa-reissuanne. Täällä on ihan kivaa.

I slept quite late. Balancing my three previous mornings when I’ve been waking before 7am. I think someone mentioned my name just before I went downstairs so it was good to know that they noticed my absence even though the kids had school.
I left around 3pm with Emma and Jukka to the nearest shopping center, The Mall. We took a small red bus there a.k.a. “shortie”. Half-way we waited for the conductor for some time but Emma said that sometimes it can take them over 20 minutes to show up. And it’s hot in the buses…
I walked around a few clothing, shoe and bag stores with Emma when Jukka went to a Thai-massage. I did find myself a new handbag and I also bought one shirt. We went to Swensen’s for an ice cream lunch and then to one hour facial. It’s so nice that you always get hand, leg and back massage kaupan päälle no matter what treatment you ordered. I spent 199 baht for the bag, 295 baht for the shirt, 99 baht for the ice cream and 350 baht for facial. According to these you can now start planning your own trip to Thailand. It’s pretty nice here.

Thailand - day 34 (BKK)

No onneksi lasit vaihtuivat melko nopeasti Levi’s-merkkiin. En tiedä, olisinko jaksanut samanlaista rumbaa enää uudelleen, mitä koettiin sunnuntaina. Minä puolestani sain aikaiseksi ostaa yhden paidan. Olen saanut melko hyvin kirittyä viime aikoina saamatonta lukemattomuuttani. I’ve kept the air/con on at a little every day for one can’t sleep in the room otherwise. Now I’ve just started to noticed some symptoms of a flu showing up so I think I should try to get along with the patlom. I really don’t feel like getting sick during the holiday. Next week would be much more appropriate. I went to Bangkhae’s glasses retailer at the traffic circle with Jukka to quickly check if they had suitable glasses for him. We didn’t find anything else but ice creams from the next door 7-Eleven. Well we left for town after quite a long time of wavering and went to Silom Center to check out those glasses again that Jukka had liked on Sunday. Well they were nice then but now, when he was supposed to actually buy them, we noticed that those Ray-Bans didn’t suit his new, shorter hairstyle at all. Well luckily we found new Levi’s ones. I don’t know if I had been able to endure another rumba which we experience on Sunday. I found myself buying a new shirt, again. I just don’t understand how it can be so difficult to find a certain kind of shirt in Bangkok! The evening passed by chilling at Thaisuko. I found a book by Terri Blackstock which I have been wanting to read for some time. My heart jumped of joy when I noticed it on the shelf in the school library and I stopped talking in the middle of my sentence. I’ve managed to catch up my shiftlessness with reading a little.
