Thu 15/11/12 - Exhausted

Eilen ohjaajani osti minulle cappuccinon lounasaikaan.

~*~*~*~

I don't know why but I'm feeling more and more tired all the time. Today I realized how exhausted I really was when I heard about the Aberfan disaster for the fourth time since I've been here.

The Aberfan disaster took place in 1966 when colliery spoil tip collapsed in a nearby village. The spoil rolled down the hill and crushed a school and houses. 116 children and 28 adults were killed. An artist sympathized with the families and so he walked around the village collecting photos of the dead children and then he painted a portrait of the lost child for each family. The paintings are reputedly quite big and of good quality. The disaster is a very sensitive topic around here still - well, it hasn't even been 50 years yet.

But my tiredness point was that even though I was able to fake being really interested, I wasn't happy with the amount of keenness I squeezed out of myself. I know it was the fourth time I heard about the accident but I didn't have the heart to tell that to the other person. Especially when I noticed how happy the person was to tell me about the history of the area.

In general, I am extremely interested in anything and everything the people care to share with me. I'm just really annoyed that I'm this tired! Because I've been sleeping pretty well (excluding some restless dreams in which I've been tearing down the roof) I blame this darkness and the coldness for making me so tired. Hanna has also been troubled by fatigue so I'm not alone with this problem.

On a positive note, I did much better with the patient-documenting today. I even got to care for a post-operation wound. I might even be allowed to measure blood sugar from the tip of the finger - at least I'm hoping even though it would be a rather big responsibility around here. My mentor and I also noted today that it must have been decided by a man that anyone can catheterize a woman but to catheterize a man you need to go through a specific training. Any one who has ever catheterized both men and women can probably agree with me that it's all in all a ridiculous practice!

Yesterday my mentor bought me cappuccino around lunch time. Today I got an orangeade and a chicken pasty as a snack before lunch. Another nurse gave me a box of chocolates most of which I left in the office anyway since they weren't that good. And they asked me today after I finished writing down their calls for Monday if I wanted to stay for more than two weeks. Am I nice or am I nice? Or am I being exploited...

En olekaan päivittänyt ruoka-aiheisia kuvia vähään aikaan. //
I haven't posted any food-related photos in a while.
