Mon 05/11/12 - Bonfire night

Tänään vietettiin täällä Guy Fawkesin yötä (tunnetaan myös nimellä Bonfire Night eli kokkoyö). Englantilainen salaliittolainen Guy Fawkes päätti vuonna 1605 kavereineen räjäyttää Westminsterin palatsin vuokraamalla palatsin kellarit ja sijoittamalla sinne 36 tynnyriä ruutia. Kuninkaan murhayritys epäonnistui, joten 5. marraskuuta juhlistetaan sitä kokoin ja ilotulittein. Näitä ilotulitteita olemme siis kuulleet muutaman viikon ajan.

Kävimme Cyfarthfan linnan luona katsomassa Merthyr Tydfilin ilotulitenäytöstä. Kuvista asia ei selviä, mutta oli kyllä hieno ilotulitus - josta muuten maksettiin peräti 2 puntaa.

Huomenna lähdemme Irlantiin, joten en tiedä, milloin päivitän blogia seuraavaksi, viikonloppuna viimeistään. Ja hätätilanteita varten: Käytämme Irlannissa suomalaisia numeroitamme.

Today was Guy Fawkes Night aka Bonfire night. Back in 1605 an English conspirator Guy Fawkes decided with his friends to blow up the Palace of Westminster by renting its basement and placing 36 barrels of gunpowder there. The assassination attempt of the King was unsuccessful so they celebrate it on the 5th of November with bonfires and fireworks. These are the fireworks we've been hearing throughout a couple of weeks.

We went to the Cyfarthfa castle to watch Merthyr Tydfil's fireworks display. You can't tell from the photos but it was quite a brilliant show - for which we paid 2 pounds each.

Tomorrow we are off to Ireland so I'm not sure when I'll update this blog next, during the weekend the latest. And in case of emergency: We will be using our Finnish numbers while in Ireland.

Kokoissa paloi roskien ja puutavaran lisäksi mm. sohvia. //

In addition to rubbish and wood, there were e.g. couches in the bonfires.
