Tällä kertaa rustataan kahdella kielellä. / Today I'll write in two languages.

Lähdimme aamulla Treforestiin yliopistolle toiveena päästä nettiin siellä ennen kuin tapaisimme Suen. No, eipä ollut käyttäjätunnuksia, joten millekään koneelle ei päästy. Tavattiin kyllä Kaisa, joka on ensi viikolla lähdössä neljän kuukauden jälkeen takaisin kotiin. Kaikki muut vaihtarit on sijoitettu Bridgendiin - meidät on heitetty siis tänne Merthyr Tydfiliin. Tapasimme yliopistolla myös Jimin, joka on ollut 80-luvulla Oulussa lastenosastolla töissä. "Paljon ennen teidän syntymäänne..." - Hei, mä olen syntynyt -87 Oulussa! Jim puhui erittäin hyvin suomea, mikä oli sinänsä oikein hauskaa. Hän käski soittaa, jos alkaa asiat ottaa päähän ja tekee mieli valittaa suomeksi...

Melkoisen kattavan infopaketin jälkeen, opittuamme muun muassa eron Yhdistyneen kuningaskunnan ja Iso-Britannian välillä, kiersimme pikaisesti Lower Glyntaff -kampusalueen. Sen jälkeen kävelimme junaradan toiselle puolelle ja kävimme katsomassa yliopiston pääkampusta. Huomenna vasta järjestyy yliopistoon ilmoittautuminen, jolloin saamme käyttäjätunnukset nettiin, sähköpostiosoitteet ja opiskelijahenkilökorttimme - toivottavasti. Lähdimme siis kostean ilman saattelemana takaisin Merthyriin.

Suunnittelemamme juna oli puolisen tuntia myöhässä, mutta hätä ei ollut sen näköinen, sillä edellinenkin juna oli puolisen tuntia myöhässä, joten pääsimme lähtemään aivan suunnitelman mukaisesti. Merthyrissä Genevieve tuli hakemaan meitä asemalta. Gen oli viime keväänä vaihdossa HAMKissa, Hämeenlinnassa. Hän vei meidät Costaan kahville ja esitteli minut Gingerbread Lattelle. Liian hyvää! Lisäksi opimme taas hieman (=todella paljon!) lisää Merthyristä ja missä täällä kannattaa/ei kannata käydä ja mitä kannattaa/ei kannata syödä jne. Mahtavaa, kun on joku jakamassa paikallista näkemystä!

Ilta kuluikin sitten tortillojen ja tacojen tahdissa sekä ihmetellessä, mihin eilen saapunut kämppäkaverimme on oikein kadonnut. Saiko se parissa tunnissa jo meistä tarpeekseen...?

PS. Opin uuden sanan: Ihmisen penikkatauti = Shin splints. Sitä täällä pelätään, kun tuota mäkeä alaspäin tallustellaan. Sairaalalta tullessa tie on kuulemma suorimmillaan 8-asteen kulmassa... Tiedossa siis tämän reissun jälkeen joko massiiviset jalkalihakset tai rasitusmurtuma ja kävelykepit koko kevään ajan.

We left for the university in Treforest in the morning hoping that we could get some Internet surfing done before meeting Sue. Well, we didn't have user-IDs so we didn't get any Skyping or IMing done either. We did however meet Kaisa, who's leaving next week back to Finland after 4 months of practical training. All the other exchange students have been placed in Bridgend - we've been tossed here in Merthyr Tydfil. We also met Jim at the university. Jim has been in Finland back in the 80's working at a children's ward in Oulu. "Way before you were born..." - Hey, I was born in 1987 in Oulu! Jim spoke Finnish very well which was very nice. He told us to call him if things started to irritate us and we wanted to complain in Finnish...

After rather extensive information session, during which we learnt the difference between United Kingdom and Great Britain for example, we quickly walked around the Lower Glyntaff campus. Then we walked to the other side of the railway and visited the main campus. We'll be able to enrol at the university tomorrow after which we'll get our student IDs, emails and uni cards - hopefully. So we left back to Merthyr accompanied by a rather damp weather.

The train, we were planning to take, was half an hour late. But no worries, since the previous train was also half an hour late, so we ended up leaving exactly as planned. Once in Merthyr, we met up with Genevieve at the station. She was on exchange in HAMK, Hämeenlinna last spring. She took us to Costa for a coffee and introduced me to Gingerbread latte. Too good! We also learnt slightly (=a lot!) more about Merthyr and where to go/not to go, what to eat/not to eat, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. It's magnificent having someone who knows the place and customs, I'm telling you!

The evening was spent with tortillas and tacos and also wondering where our new flatmate had disappeared. She only arrived last night. Did she really get fed up with us in only a couple of hours...?

PS. I learnt a new word today: Shin splints. We are very much afraid of it as we walk down the hill. I was told that the hill from the hospital is 8-degrees at its flattest. So after this trip we'll either end up having massive leg muscles or stress fracture and crutches for the entire spring.

The food at the campus canteen was not that excellent.
