Fri 28/09/12 - Hospital induction & unwellness

Minun käsilläni on jo vähän liiankin selkeä omatunto.

~*~*~*~

Hanna was still feeling slightly weak in the morning so I left with Susanna for the hospital's induction day. We'd been told that it'd start at 9 am but it obviously started at 9:30. We sat there until a little over 3 pm. Susanna's just started her third year of studies and I'm on my last year so sitting there with students who had just started their studies was bound to mean a lot of revising.

The fire training was probably the only new and educational thing the entire day. Otherwise we were taught about hand-hygiene etc. And I can assure you that Finns don't need to be taught about hand-hygiene over here. My hands have a conscience already and it's sometimes a bit too strong even. Basically I managed to go through a similar kind of info in two hours in Finland two years ago.

We were told that we are not allowed to post photos of ourselves drunk on our Facebook - or let friends do it. And we are not allowed to state on Facebook that we are employed by Prince Charles hospital. And we are not allowed to say that we are studying nursing. I wonder if I should delete my account for 2,5 months...

My head began to ache and my nose started to get blocked during the day. I got some red and blue capsules from the store. They were supposed to help with the block nose and sinuses. I quickly read the instructions that two capsules every four hours. So, I took two capsules and rested for a while. One and a half hours later I was feeling better. Even the headache was gone. I marveled at it for a while before I decided to read the medicine description more carefully. One capsule had 500mg paracetamol, 25mg caffeine and 6.1mg phenylephrine hydrochloride. No wonder my headache was treated with the paracetamol. Luckily I didn’t take extra 1000mg paracetamol for my headache…

We talked about this during the induction day today when we discussed medicine errors. Most commonly the nurse gives medicine to a wrong patient. The patient looks at the pills, frowns, takes the pills and only then asks: “What was the black on? I usually get two pills but this time there were four. What was the black one? It looked weird…” Susanna told me that she had got Duact from her doctor and she knew that she was allergic to some similar type of medicine. Well, she took Duact first, then she called her mom only to be confirmed that it was actually Duact to which she was slightly allergic.  One should probably develop some sense of self-protections concerning the pills…

I was also slightly beffudled as the instructions say that you can have 1g of paracetamol every four hours but no more than 8 capsules a day. It still adds up to 4 grams of paracetamol every day which really is at the end of liver’s tolerance. So maybe I’ll just take 2 capsules three times a day and then some Strepsils. That should make me feel better by Monday morning.

Hanna is feeling slightly better as well.

Tämän päiväinen lounas sairaalan kanttiinissa. / Today's lunch at the hospital's canteen.
// The beautiful pills I'm taking now. And while at Tesco I saw samosas on a packet and suddenly felt this incredible craving. But oh dear me, how awful they were!
Smarties-jogurtti helpotti pahaan makuun suussa Tescon samosojen (kirjoitusasu?) jälkeen. // Smarties yoghurt helped with the nasty taste in my mouth after the Tesco samosas.
