Woke up and
had a shower which was quite nice. Then a cleaner lady came by and she
explained how the housekeeping works. She comes and picks up the rubbish
everyday and cleans up the kitchen and the bathroom once a week. We probably
will clean them up once a week as well by ourselves. ;) And she’ll get us clean
sheets when we need them. And she also showed us where the laundry room is. I
find it odd that I’ve had to ask all these practical questions since we were
not given any instructions on them. The washing machine costs £1.40 per wash
and the tumble drier is £0.40 per dry. Now we just need to start hoarding
one-pound-coins and 20-pence-coins.
I left a
message on the IT support’s answering machine. I’m expecting them to never get back
to me… But we managed to sort out our Internet. More on that later.
After lunch
at the hospital’s canteen we walked down to town. Hanna bought a SIM card yesterday
which allows her to access the Internet “as much as she can eat”. Very
convenient since she has Nokia Maps on her Lumia. The people haven’t been too
keen to tell us how to get to town – and we haven’t found a map of the town
anywhere. Everyone has seemed to think that it is way too far to walk and
recommended the bus number 27 or the taxis. Well, it is all the way downhill
since the hospital is located on top of a rather high hill. It was a very nice
walk and took us about 40 minutes. Definitely going to walk down again next
time.
After futilely
going through a couple of shops for the Internet, we met Sue Harris at the bus
station at 4pm and had some coffee (and tea and milkshake) with her. She seemed
very nice. We got some general information on the university and we decided to meet
her in Treforest at the varsity’s campus on Monday at 11:30am. She then
accompanied us to three more shops and then we returned back to the one we had
visited first in the afternoon by ourselves. This time they had a cleverer plan
for us. Susanna and I bought a £24.99 pay as you go Internet deal that’s valid
for 3 months. It has unlimited web browsing and 2GB download limit. BUT after
Hanna managed to update her phone through my Internet, we can use her Nokia
Lumia for wireless Internet and upload or download photos and videos through
that. So there will be photos on this blog! Yay!
This is our fourth roomie, Pinku.
She needed a bag to fit in so today Hanna got her one.

For a
moment life seemed rather hopeless. This place is quite backward. But now with
proper Internet, I think things will start to work out just fine. And now after
having had an excellent dinner a la Susanna, I’m happy to go to bed. We’ll
probably go to Cardiff tomorrow if we are feeling up to it in the morning.
