Wed 26/09/12 - HPV jab & Audiology

Tänään siis kolmas päivä harjoittelussa. Aamupäivällä istuin katsomassa, kuinka yli 100 tyttöä sai HPV-rokotteen. Toistan: istuin katsomassa. Tosi jännää... Täällä ei siis sairaanhoitajat saa antaa rokotteita ilman erillistä koulutusta ja sen jälkeen lääkäriltä on vielä haettava lupa, että hänkin hyväksyy hoitajan rokotuspätevyyden. Vähän siis samanlainen tilanne kuin Suomessa, mutta hieman monimutkaisemmin hoidettu. Yksi hoitajista sanoi, että saattaisi antaa opiskelijalle luvan kokeilla rokottamista, jos nämä olisivat muutaman kuukauden olleet harjoittelussa. Tämä asia on meidän opiskelijoiden kannalta onneksi hoidettu melko lailla eri tavalla Suomessa, missä siis saamme harjoitella rokottamista aika pian neliviikkoisen harjoittelumme alettua.

Hoitajia oli varattu rokottamistapahtumaan kuusi kappaletta. Yksi vastaanotti tyttöjä, kolme rokotti ja kaksi hoiti "palautumishuonetta", missä tytöt joutuivat rokottamisen jälkeen odottamaan 15 minuuttia, jotta saatiin seurattua mahdollisia allergisia reaktioita. Koska tyttöjä tuli jonossa sisään, oli myös hysteria välillä sen mukaista. Osaa alkoi huimata, osaa oksettaa, toisia kuumotti. Osa itki, osa tärisi jännityksestä. Yhtä ei kuumeilun vuoksi voitu rokottaa ja hän itki sen takia. Toiset taas olivat aivan rentoina = ihania rokotettavia.

Tämänpäiväinen HPV-rokote eli Gardasil, jota ilmeisesti käytetään Suomessakin, on tarkoitettu suojaamaan papilloomaviruksen neljän eri muodon aiheuttamilta sairauksilta, kuten kohdunkaulansyövältä.

Rokotussession jälkeen lähdin Royal Glamorgan -sairaalaan tutustumaan paikalliseen lasten kuuloklinikkaan. Iltapäivä oli aika hiljainen, kun sain selville, että täällä päin vastaanotolle tuleminen ei välttämättä ole kovin yleistä. Mutta opin ainakin, mitä OAE oikeasti tarkoittaa. Ja täytyy myöntää, että mielelläni vietin iltapäivän siellä - enkä toimistolla paperitöiden parissa.

Royal Glamorgan -sairaalalta olin tilannut kyydin takaisin Prince Charles -sairaalaan tänne Merthyriin. Kuskia ei oltu asiasta infottu loppuun asti. Hänelle oli annettu lista neljästä henkilöstä, joten hän oli tavallisella henkilöautolla liikkeellä. Minut mukaan lukien meitä olikin viisi poimittavaksi matkalta. No, ensin sovittiin, että tilaavat minulle taksin, mutta sitten selvisikin, että kaksi kyytiläisistä ei ollutkaan matkalla Prince Charlesiin asti vaan jäisivät pois heti seuraavan sairaalan kohdalla, josta tulisi vasta seuraava kyytiin. Näin ollen lähdin NHS:n järjestämällä kyydillä kohti Merthyriä. Täällä päin NHS on järjestänyt erilaisiin koulutuksiin liikkuvalle henkilökunnalle ilmaisen kyydityksen isoimpien sairaaloiden välillä. Minä aion nyt siis hyötyä tästä palvelusta ainakin seuraavat kaksi viikkoa. Kuski oli erittäin mukava ja pääsin aivan kotiovelle asti. Ei lainkaan paha... Lopulta.

Olen käyttänyt 80% tämän kuun latausrajasta ja vielä olisi yli kaksi viikkoa aikaa ennen ensi kuuta. En voi sanoa nauttivani paikallisesta Internet-järjestelystä.

So third day of practical training. In the morning I sat and watched how over 100 girls received the HPV-vaccination. I repeat: I sat and watched. Very exciting... Here the nurses are not allowed to vaccinate without a specific training and even after that they must have a doctor's written consent that he/she agrees the nurse is qualified to vaccinate. So it works sort of in similar way as it does in Finland except here it's organized in a bit more complicated way. One of the nurses said that she might allow the student to try vaccinating if they stayed with them for a couple of months. Luckily for us students this is arranged quite differently in Finland where we can practice vaccinating quite soon after our four-week-training begins.

They had six nurses for this vaccination session. One received the girls, three vaccinated and two took care of the "recovery room" where the girls had to wait for 15 minutes after their vaccination in case any allergic reactions occurred. Because the girls were queuing in, there was bound to be some hysteria. Some felt dizzy, some nauseous, others were boiling. Some cried, some shook of nervousness. One girl couldn't be vaccinated because she was feverish and she cried for that. Some were completely relaxed = wonderful to vaccinate.

Today's HPV vaccination, Gardasil is meant to protect against four types of human papilloma virus which can cause cervical cancer, for example. The same vaccination seems to be used in Finland as well.

After the vaccination session I left for Royal Glamorgan hospital to see how local children's hearing clinic works. Afternoon was relatively quiet when I found out that it's quite common that people don't show up for their appointments. But I did learnt how OAE actually works. And I must admit that I preferred to spend my afternoon there - rather than at the office with paperwork.

I had booked a seat on the shuttle bus from Royal Glamorgan back to Prince Charles Hospital here in Merthyr. The driver however had not been notified. He'd been given a list of four people so he was driving a normal sedan. Including me there was five of us to be picked up on the way. Well, we agreed that they'd get me a taxi but then we found out that two of the ladies would not be going to Prince Charles but would get off at the next hospital instead and that's where the next person would get on. Therefore I left for Merthyr on a ride organised by the NHS. NHS has arranged a shuttle bus between the biggest hospitals for their staff members who have to attend training in different hospitals. So I'm going to benefit from this service during the next couple of weeks. The driver was very nice and he took me all the way to the front door of our block. Not bad at all... Eventually.

I've used 80% of my download limit this month and I still have over two more weeks to go before next month. I can't really say I love the local Internet system.
