Thailand - day 33 (BKK)

Skytrainia odotellen. / Waiting for Skytrain.

Lähdimme Johannan kanssa kaupunkiin klo 10 aikoihin. Ensin taksilla skytrain-asemalle ja skytrainillä sitten Siamiin. Siam Paragon on aika mahtavannäköinen uusi ostoskeskus. Siellä on todella upean näköinen elokuvateatteri, mutta valitettavasti ei ollut mitään näkemisen arvoista elokuvaa. Thaimaassa ihmiset katsovat paljon kauhua ja harmittavan vähän on thaimaalaisia elokuvia tekstitetty englanniksi. Kiersimme, vaikkakaan emme rajatun aikamme vuoksi kovin huolellisesti, MBK-, Siam Center-, Siam Discovery- ja Siam Paragon -ostoskeskukset.
Siam Paragonissa söimme lounaan jälkiruokineen Secret Recipe –ravintolassa. Siellä oli aivan älyttömän ihanaa suklaakakkua! Eikä se kanakaan niin pahaa ollut. Pyysimme viimein ’check bin’in ja kun olimme maksamassa, viereisessä pöydässä istunut nuori mies keskeytti meidät. Hän sanoi, että laskussa täytyy olla virhe, ettemme me ole voineet syödä niin paljon. Summa oli yhteensä jotain 750 bahtia eli 375 bahtia per henkilö. Kyllä sellaisella rahalla mielestäni syö ihan hyvin pääruoan ja jälkiruoan juomineen. Mies päivitteli sitä siinä sitten aikansa. ”Mahdatte olla kaksi nälkäistä tyttöä...” Oli kyllä hieman noloa... No, ainakaan emme olleet enää niinkään nälkäisiä maksettuamme.
Lounaan jälkeen menimme Siam Ocean Worldiin. Lippu maksoi 750 bahtia ja siihen kuului näyttely, lasipohjavenekierros ja 4D-elokuva. Olisin tajunnut tarkistaa, niin hinta sellaiselle, joka osaa lukea thaita olisi ollut 450 bahtia. Joka tapauksessa näyttelyssä oli kyllä esillä jos jonkinlaista. Siellä oli todella rumia kaloja, värikkäitä pikkukaloja, neonvalossa hohtavia skorpioneja, valtava tonnikala, fossiileja, meduusoja, suuria rapuja, haita... Saimme silittää ja ottaa pideltäväksi meritähden, hain tyhjän munan, käärmeen, sinikieliliskon... Lasipohjavene ei ollut niin erikoinen, vaikka näimmekin haita ja rauskuja. Eksoottisemmaksi sen teki se, että reissuseuramme oli ruotsalaista. 4D-elokuva puolestaan oli melko vaikuttava. Se kertoi merestä dinosaurusten aikaan. Sydän hypähti muutaman kerran ja taisin ainakin kahdesti mutista itselleni, että ”ei enää yhtään lähemmäksi niitä lonkeroita, kiitos”.
Illalla lähdimme bussilla takaisin Thaisukolle. Matka kesti noin tunnin ja maksoi 8,50 bahtia. Aika kokemus sekin. Sain seistä lähes puolet matkasta, sillä oli niin täyttä. Bussien lattiat on tehty puisista laudoista, ilmastoinnin hoitaa kattoon kiinnitetyt patlomit ja penkit on tehty nahasta, ainakin teko-sellaisesta. 11 tunnin kaupunginosakierroksen jälkeen oli ihan kiva nukahtaa Patricia Cornwellin romaanin saattelemana.

I left with Johanna to the city center around 10am. First we took the taxi to the sky train station and the by sky train to Siam, another quarter around here. Siam Paragon is a pretty impressive looking new shopping centre. They have a really nice looking movie theatre but unfortunately they didn’t have any movie worth watching. The people here watch a lot of horror movies and regrettably few Thai movies have English subtitles. We walked around MGK, Siam Center, Siam Discovery and Siam Paragon shopping centres, though not that thoroughly due to our limited schedule.
We had lunch at a restaurant called Secret Recipe in Siam Paragon. They have divine chocolate cake there! And the chicken wasn’t that bad either. When we finally asked for the ‘check bin’ and as we were paying, the man sitting in the table next to us interrupted us. He said that there must be something wrong with the bill and that there was no way we could’ve eaten so much. The sum was something like 750 baht so 375 baht per person. I think it’s a reasonable price to pay for a main meal, dessert and drinks. The man took his time shaking his head in disbelief. “You must be two very hungry girls…” It was rather embarrassing… Well, at least we weren’t as hungry anymore after we paid.
After lunch we went to Siam Ocean World. The ticket cost 750 baht and it included the exhibition, glass-bottom boat tour and 4D-movie. Had I realised to check for people who can read Thai the price was 450 baht. Anyway, the exhibition had a lot of stuff to show. They had really ugly fishes, colourful little fishes, scorpions which glowed in neon-light, a huge tuna fish, fossils, jellyfishes, big crabs, sharks… We got to pet and hold a starfish, an empty egg case of a shark, a snake, blue-tongue lizard… The glass-bottom boat wasn’t that spectacular though we did see sharks and skates. More exotic part of that were the Swedish tourists in the boat with us. The 4D movie instead was pretty awesome. It was about the ocean back in the dinosaur era. My heart jumped a couple times and I think I muttered to myself at least twice “not an inch closer with those tendrils, thank you”.
In the evening we took the bus back to Thaisuko. The trip took about an hour and it cost 8,50 baht. Some experience it was. I got to stand almost half of the way since it was so full. The floors of the buses are made of wood, air/con is comprehended as patloms embedded into the ceiling and the seats are made of leather, at least artificial leather. After 11 hours of shopping it was nice to fall asleep after reading some Patricia Cornwell.

Thailand - day 32 (BKK)

Tervehdys Bangkokista! Hengissä ollaan. Yritän pitää kaikki muistissa ja kirjoitan päivistä tarkemmin myöhemmin. Täällä on niin kuuman kostea, ettei nyt kyllä jaksa. Tultiin juuri kaupungilta. Aika iso city tämä kyllä on.

Greetings from Bangkok! I'm alive. I try to remember everything and will write on my days sometime later. It's so humid and hot that I have no energy at the moment. We just got back from downtown. It's a rather big city this one.

Heräsin klo 6. On niin kuuma ja kostea. Lähdimme amerikkalaiseen seurakuntaan keskustaan päin. Ajo kesti melkein tunnin. Evangelical Church of Bangkok taisi olla paikan nimi. Saarnavastuussa oli entinen muslimi, nykyinen kristitty Michiganista. Hän kuulemma osasi sekä Koraanin että Raamatun ulkoa. Aika vaikuttavaa, täytyy myöntää.
Kokouksen jälkeen näimme yhden aika edustavannäköisen auton, tummanharmaan Ferrarin. Ohitimme sen Toyota-turbo-minibussilla. Ette uskokaan, kuinka hyvä kuski Joni on! Täällä kyllä täytyy olla myös toisaalta melkoinen hullu, että vapaaehtoisesti haluaa ajaa täällä ruuhkassa. Urheiluautot kyllä saavat aika hyvin tilaa pyytämättäkin. Vähän myöhemmin, kun olimme kääntymässä eräästä risteyksestä, ohi ajoi punainen Ferrari. Ihan kivoja autoja täällä päin muutenkin.
Jäin Jukan, Jonin veljen, ja Tomin, Thaisukolla asuvan lukio-opiskelijan, kanssa kaupunkiin, keskustaan, Silomin laidalle. Tarkoitus oli mennä Silomissa sijaitsevaan golf-kauppaan ja silmälasiliikkeeseen. Olimme siis jo Silomissa. Miten vaikeaa nyt yhden kaupan löytäminen voi olla, niinhän?! Kävelimme noin tunnin kohti haluttuja kauppojamme. Lisäksi matkalla pysähdyimme kerran 7-Elevenissä ostamassa vettä, sillä kahden aikaan täällä Thaimaassa on sietämättömän kuuma, ja kerran pysähdyimme Mäkkiin syömään. Koko ajan olimme siis Silomissa, aivan oikeassa kaupunginosassa, emmekä eksyneet kertaakaan. Jukka-rukka sai melkein rakot jalkoihinsa. Tuli kerralla hyvin selväksi, minkä kokoinen kaupunki tämä Bangkok oikein on.
Illalla lähdimme vähän kokeilemaan svingiä golf-rangelle ja pelaamaan sulkapalloa. En ole kai juonut tänään tarpeeksi. Päätä särkee ja olo on melko kamala. Lisäksi täällä on niin kuuman kostea, ettei ole edes inhimillistä elää. Mae Hong Son on kuivempi ja siellä on sentään illat viileitä.

I woke up at 6am. It is so hot and humid. We left for an American church towards the downtown. The drive there took almost an hour. If I remember correctly the place was called Evangelical Church of Bangkok. There was an ex-Muslim, now Christian man from Michigan preaching. They said that he knew both the Bible and Koran off by heart. Pretty impressing, must admit.
After the service we saw one rather majestic car, dark-gray Ferrari. We took it over with our turbo-Toyota-minibus. You would never believe how amazing driver Joni is! On the other hand, one must be rather mad to drive in this jam voluntarily. To sport cars people do give way, however. A little bit later when we were in an intersection a red Ferrari drove past us. They have really nice cars here in Bangkok in general.
Joni dropped me, Jukka, Joni’s brother, and Tomi, a high school student living at Thaisuko, off in Silom. We were going to go shopping golf supplies and glasses in Silom. So there we are in Silom already. How hard can it be to find one shop, right?! We walked about an hour towards these wanted shops. We stopped once at 7-Eleven to buy some water since around 2pm it’s unbearably hot here in Thailand, and once we stopped by McDonald’s to eat something. So all this time we were in Silom, the correct quarter, and we didn’t get lost. Poor Jukka almost got blisters on his feet. It’s now very clear to me how big city this Bangkok really is.
In the evening we went to try out our swing at a golf-range and we played some badminton as well. I don’t think I’ve drunk enough today. My head’s aching and I’m feeling pretty horrible. And it’s also so humidly hot that it’s not even human to live here. Mae Hong Son is drier and there the evenings are still cool.

Thailand - day 31 (MHS-Bangkok)

Meillä oli aamulla vielä puoleenpäivään asti koulua Mae Hong Sonissa. Söimme lounaan, pakkasimme viimeiset tavarat ja sitten Timo vei minut ja Elinan lentokentälle. Elina jäi Chiang Maihin ja minä jatkoin Don Mueangin kentälle, Bangkokiin. Lennot sujui ongelmitta. Don Mueangista otin taksin, jonka kuljettaja löysi kohtuullisen helposti perille Bangkhaen kaupunginosaan ja jopa THaimaan SUomi-KOululle, Thaisukolle. Matkaa oli varmaan jotain 50-60 kilometriä ja siihen kului tunti. Maksoin taksimatkasta 440 bahtia highway-tulleineen. Samalla rahalla pääsisin viikonloppuisin Suomessa varmaan ehkä naapuritaloon asti.
Koulun rehtori, Mikael ohjasi minut huoneeseen, jossa on tarkoitus majoittua tämä lomaviikko. Joni ja Emma, jotka ovat siis koulun asuntolavastaavia ja joiden kanssa olin tarkemmin sopinut lomailustani Bangkokissa, tulivat thai-hieronnasta ehkä puoli tuntia myöhemmin. Yritimme etsiä Cha Amista hotellia ensi viikonloppua varten, mutta ei löytynyt oikein mitään sopivaa.
Illalla luin pikaisesti Agatha Christien ”Kuolleen miehen huvimajan” ja menin sitten nukkumaan. Olen taas niin kiitollinen, että joku on keksinyt ilmastointilaitteen ja patlomin (=tuuletin/puhallin).

The school in Mae Hong Son ended at noon. We ate lunch, packed the few last things and then Timo took me and Elina to the airport. Elina stayed in Chiang Mai and I flew to Bangkok, to Don Mueang airport. The flights went without any trouble at all. From Don Mueang I took a taxi-meter and the driver found the kaupunginosa, Bangkhae rather easily and even the right house, the Finnish school of Thailand (THaimaan SUomi-KOulu), Thaisuko. The trip was probably 50-60 kilometres and it took an hour. I paid for the whole trip including the highway tolls 440 baht. With the same amount of money in Finland I could probably go to my neighbor’s house during the weekend.
The headmaster of the school, Mikael showed me my room where I’m supposed to accommodate myself for this holiday week. Joni and Emma, who are in charge of the boarding and with whom I had talked about my holiday in more detail, had gone to a Thai-massage and came maybe half an hour later. We tried to find a hotel from Cha Am for next weekend but there were nothing fitting.
In the evening I read Dead man’s folly by Agatha Christie and then I fell asleep. I’m again so glad that someone has invented air/con and patloms (=fans).
